"The Tenth Edition of the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms® marks three decades of dynamic growth for the American Psychological Association, for PsycINFO®, and for the Thesaurus. From the first publication of Roget's thesaurus in 1852, thesauri have been used as a popular research tool to help readers understand the relationship of terminology and identify commonly used terms. The Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms, first published in 1974, has an influential role in research because it reflects the most current trends found in the behavioral and social science literature. The Thesaurus can help authenticate the use of terms as they become accepted nomenclature. This refernce is the backbone of any research in psychology because it provides a rich source of concepts that can be used for the most precise search in the PsycINFO or PsycARTICLES® electronic databases. This edition was developed in conjunction with a team of experts who come from many perspectives within the vast field of psychology. This group collaborated with our editor to update the "language of psychology" as it appears today [2005] in the scholarly literature. The Thesaurus also links recently added controlled vocabulary with a historical note that helps the researcher navigate the literature to the source of the original concept. The historical links make the Thesaurus a more powerful tool to identify word hierarchies that are extremely helpful in the research process. We encourage your use of the Tenth Edition of the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms as a multi-disciplinary research and teaching tool for students in psychology, social science, and communications. Best wishes in all of your research endeavors!"--Gary R. VandenBos, PhD, Publisher, American Psychological Association; from Preface, page v.

The ninth edition of the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms provides the psychological vocabulary used to search the 1.7 million records in the PsycINFO database. The Thesaurus contains well over 5,000 index terms with easy-to-read scope notes and definitions. This easy-to-use reference tool is divided into three sections: the Relationship Section, the Rotated Alphabetical Terms Section, and the Clusters section. In the Relationship Section, each term is listed alphabetically and is cross-referenced and displayed with its hierarchical structure denoting broader, narrower, and related terms. The Rotated Alphabetical Section list terms in alphabetical order by each component word. Finally, the Clusters Section provides groups of terms that are conceptually related and displayed under broad subject categories. This essential reference tool is completely integrated with essential tips on searching along with a quick reference guide to all online and CD-ROM systems.
