Excerpt from The Young Conductor, or Winning His Way The eastern express steamed up to the platform at Ridmouth a quarter of an hour late on that blustery autumn evening; and Jud Halpine, the engineer, and Conductor Dvyerwell were in ill-humor, for neither saw any cause for the unusual tardiness. The Asheville & Rockwell Railway, generally referred to as the A. & R., was just forty miles long. Beginning at Asheville it wound eastward eight miles to the village of Yelltown, where the first halt was made. Ten miles farther, the little town of Ridmouth was reached, after which there was an uninterrupted run of twenty-two miles through a wild country, mostly wilderness, and a good deal of the way beside the angry stream known as the White Mud River, to Rockwell, where the branch or feeder of the Wellington & Roxmore through route terminated. (Amadeus). Conducting an orchestra is something that is seen as well as heard, but it is quite misunderstood when it comes to knowing what this person actually does for a living. This most mysterious of jobs is brought to life for the music lover as well as for the aspiring maestro in a book by Leonard Slatkin. Drawing on his own experiences on and off the podium, Slatkin brings us into the world of the baton. He tells tales of some of the most fascinating people in the musical world, including Frank Sinatra, Leonard Bernstein, and John Williams. He takes the reader to the great concert halls and orchestras, soundstages in Hollywood, and opera pits around the globe. Mr. Slatkin recounts his controversial appearance at the Metropolitan Opera, his creation and direction of summer music festivals, and a shattering concert experience that took place four days following 9/11. Life in the recording studio and on the road as well as health issues confronting the conductor provide an insider's glimpse into the private world of public figures. Covering everything from learning how to read music to standing in front of an orchestra for the first time, what to wear, and how to deal with the press, Conducting Business is a unique look at a unique profession.

Excerpt from Making His Way: Or Frank Courtney's Struggle Upward Two boys were walking in the campus of the Bridgeville Academy. They were apparently of about the same age - somewhere from fifteen to sixteen - but there was a considerable difference in their attire. Herbert Grant was neatly but coarsely dressed, and his shoes were of cowhide, but his face indicated a frank, sincere nature, and was expressive of intelligence. His companion was dressed in a suit of fine cloth, his linen was of the finest, his shoes were of calfskin, and he had the indefinable air of a boy who had been reared in luxury. He had not the broad, open face of his friend - for the two boys were close friends - but his features were finely chiseled, indicating a share of pride, and a bold, self-reliant nature. He, too, was an attractive boy, and in spite of his pride possessed a warm, affectionate heart and sterling qualities, likely to endear him to those who could read and understand him.
