Excerpt from The Wonders of the Yellowstone National Park Bat, while visiting the Park found it so interesting he wanted all his friends to know of the many unique features contained within its boundaries. He decided to write a book telling of all its wonders for their benefit. He has traveled the Park thoroughly from end to end, traveled via camping outfits, also by both stage routes, which house their people in regular hotels. He visited every place of interest and has told it in his own flow of colloquialism' which the readers of advance sheets proclaim great. Bat has told what he thinks is the most interesting way to travel through the Park, also, he has told which places he found the most enjoyable. He has explained the most interesting things in the Park, where they are, how to find them and when to go. The little man of brawn and brain has told several amusing stories of old, ancient hunters and trappers as best his colloquy will permit. Excerpt from Yellowstone National Park Yellowstone is the largest and probably the most famous of our national parks. There is no other region like it. In the variety and power of its geysers, in the diversity of its wonders, it has no rival. The Park, second in historical rank, was created by act of Congress, in 1872, for the perpetual enjoyment of the people. Uncle Sam has made it convenient and comfortable for all who wish to come. Yellowstone National Park is situated in northwestern Wyoming and extends slightly into Idaho and Montana. It is about 62 miles long and 54 miles wide, and has an area of square miles. Its general physical character is that of a broad, volcanic plateau with an average elevation of feet, and surrounded by mountain ranges rising from to feet higher. Oldham, who, also was anxious to behold the beauties of this wonderful region, and we concluded to make immediate prepara tions for our departure. We accordingly each procured a saddle horse and a pack animal and expected to complete our prepara tions and be upon the road by the 1st of August. A few day 8 previous to the time of our contemplated departure, however, I met Mr. A. Arnold, of Blackfoot, who, upon being informed that Mr. Oldham and myself were about ready to start for the Geysers or National Park, said that if we would wait un til he could complete his preparations he would accompany us. Being glad of his company we consented to do so, and then, since there were three of us, we altered our plans as to the manner of our going and procured a buggy. Excerpt from Wonders of the Yellowstone The following description of the marvellous features and phenomena of the Yellowstone Lake Region in the Rocky Mountains begins close to its northern border, at the frontier military post of Fort Ellis. Here, on the verge of the Yellow Valley, is the starting-point of the several exploring parties who have made known to the world the wonders of this extraordinary territory; and here, doubtless, for many years to come the traveller in quest of the scenes described in these pages will shake hands with the advance guard of civilization before plunging into the wilderness. The discoveries narrated form an event of high public interest in the history of the United States, and have already been the subject of a legislative enactment. In consideration of the importance of the discoveries, and from a conviction that in a few years this region will be a place of resort for visitors from all parts of the world, the Senate and House of Representatives, on March 1, 1872, passed an act withdrawing from settlement, occupancy, or sale, under the laws of the United States, the tract of land described, being in extent 55 by 65 miles, and which territory is dedicated and set apart as a great national park or pleasure ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people. Excerpt from The Yellowstone National Park: Historical and Descriptive; Illustrated With Maps, View and Portraits In submitting to the public this second revision of "The Yellowstone," reference to the author's official connection, now permanently severed, with the region to which it relates may not be out of place. It has proven a rule almost without exception that those who have been assigned to duty in the Park, whether in public or private capacity, have become enamored of the service there and have accepted its termination with feelings of affectionate regret. Such was emphatically the author's experience. A two years' detail (1891-92) as assistant to the officer in charge of road construction, developed an interest in that region which has never since diminished. The first edition of "The Yellowstone" (1895) was an outgrowth of that early acquaintance. Later, in 1899, after the close of the Spanish-American war, the author was again sent to the Park, this time in exclusive charge of the road work. By a fortunate combination of circumstances Congress was induced to give upward of a million dollars for the work during the next seven years and thus to make possible the development of a really comprehensive system of highways. This work, which embraced the construction, more or less complete, of about four hundred miles of mountain roads, was of absorbing interest, and it is a matter of no especial credit that the author should have given to it, from beginning to end, the utmost of his time and abilities. It was in the fullest sense a labor of love and to an unusual degree one of direct personal supervision. Disappointment there was, as in all similar work, in the never-ceasing, but rarely successful, effort to bridge completely the chasm between an ideal result and that which available resources permit.
