Excerpt from The Women of the Gael Gae renders justice - even romantic justice - to the woman hood of the country whose representations are Dark Rosaleen, and Kathleen ni Houlihan, and The Poor Old Woman. Its writer has made of it a long roll of honor, a roll of women with beautiful names who have been remembered for their piety, their learning, and their patriotism: It is distinctly a Legend of Good Women. Little is said of another type of woman that has been celebrated from far-of times in Ireland - the woman whose virtue was in her overflowing energy, the woman whose type is Queen Maeve, bearer of warrior children, herself a warrior and a great lover. And naturally in a Legend of Good Women nothing would be said of that woman of the o'briens who, on coming back to her castle, finds the women lamenting for her husband slain in battle, and says Dead men are no use to us here, and rides back to the battle-line, and there and then marries the general of the opposing army. Little is said of the women of that type: The Women of the Gael who are spoken of have their names on the roll for being guardians of the national virtue and custodians of the Gaelic civilization. Excerpt from The Women of the Debatable Land A half a century has passed, and the survivors of the Civil War are few and far between, but their children and children's children should consider it a sacred obli garion to erect a memento to the women of Virginia who sacrificed their all that the cause they loved should never die. If this book should even in a measure invoke popular sentiment to accomplish this end, and if I live to see such a statue before I cross the Mystic River, I can exclaim with my last breath, I have not lived in vain. Excerpt from Songs of the Gael: A Collection of Anglo-Irish Songs and Ballads Wedded to Old Traditional Irish Airs As to the songs - I have aimed at selecting those which have in them the true national ring. We want in the Ireland of to-day an antidote to the Spirit of Anglicisation which is abroad. I know no more effective barrier against the encroach ment of that Spirit, next to the Irish Language and Irish Song, than the general singing at concerts and gatherings of good anglo-irish ballads and songs. The music hall and concert room may be made a very powerful agency in de-nationalising and even in debasing our people. From a national and moral point of View what effect can empty, Vulgar, mawkishly sentimental songs have And such songs are only too often heard at our so-called Irish Concerts. Or the song whose lewd allusions are thinly veiled? Or the songs that ignore and deliberately eschew the glories and noble deeds and sacri fices of our past heroes - what effect can such songs as these have on Irish youth It has been truly said that in a nation's ballads we find the history of its struggles and pro gress and triumph. A nation's habits, too, and its traditions and recollections are enshrined in its ballads. The wandering bards and minstrels became the keepers of the records of the nation and hence they were hunted down by the oppressors. A well-known collector of Irish ballads claims for Ireland as high a rank in ballad literature as that of any other nation. In this collection which I now give to the public, Irish men and women will find songs which are all racy of the soil. Excerpt from More Bywords So rang forth the supplication, echoing from rock and fell, as the people of Claudiodunum streamed forth in the May sunshine to invoke a blessing on the cornlands, olives, and vineyards that won vantage-ground on the terraces carefully kept up on the slopes of the wonderful needle-shaped hills of Auvergne. Very recently had the Church of Gaul commenced the custom of going forth, on the days preceding the Ascension feast, to chant Litanies, calling down the Divine protection on field and fold, corn and wine, basket and store. Acclaimed restaurant critic Gael Greene dishes up a delectable memoir-complete with her favorite recipes-from a lifelong love affair with food, men, and wine. In 1968, Gael Greene became the restaurant critic of the fledgling New York magazine. Before taking the job, she'd never written a restaurant review in her life. But she was a passionate foodie, and dining in the world's great restaurants on someone else's dime was too enticing to resist. Thus began a remarkable career charting the restaurants that changed the way Americans ate, the chefs who turned cooking into an art form, and the food and wines that launched a culinary revolution. Throughout it all, Gael is convinced that food and sex are inextricably linked, and in this exuberant account of her adventures in sensuous excess, she takes readers on a joyride from the world's best tables, to al fresco lunch with Julia Child and naughty dinners with Craig Claiborne and then to bed with the men she couldn't resist-including a porn star and two Hollywood titans. The recipes she includes reflect the decades, from childhood macaroni-and-cheese to Chocolate Wickedness. Greene's tale of pleasure and heartbreak will make you laugh. It may make you cry. It will certainly make you hungry.

#1 International Bestseller Winner of the 2019 Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award Winner of the 2019 Royal Society Science Book Prize A landmark, prize-winning, international bestselling examination of how a gender gap in data perpetuates bias and disadvantages women, now in paperback Data is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development to health care to education and public policy, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender, because it treats men as the default and women as atypical, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this insidious bias, in time, in money, and often with their lives. Celebrated feminist advocate Caroline Criado Perez investigates this shocking root cause of gender inequality in the award-winning, #1 international bestseller Invisible Women. Examining the home, the workplace, the public square, the doctor’s office, and more, Criado Perez unearths a dangerous pattern in data and its consequences on women’s lives. Product designers use a “one-size-fits-all” approach to everything from pianos to cell phones to voice recognition software, when in fact this approach is designed to fit men. Cities prioritize men’s needs when designing public transportation, roads, and even snow removal, neglecting to consider women’s safety or unique responsibilities and travel patterns. And in medical research, women have largely been excluded from studies and textbooks, leaving them chronically misunderstood, mistreated, and misdiagnosed. Built on hundreds of studies in the United States, in the United Kingdom, and around the world, and written with energy, wit, and sparkling intelligence, this is a groundbreaking, highly readable exposé that will change the way you look at the world.
