Excerpt from The Westminster Review, Vol. 25: January and April, 1864 The bread which M. Cousin cast upon the waters in 1848 has returned after many days, in the shape of a monograph on Bacon by M. Emile Charles; and an edition of the Opus Minus, Opus Tertium, and Com endium Philosophie, by Mr. Brewer. The latter volume, published some three years back, forms one of the valuable series of medieval chronicles and memorials, now in course of publication by the authority of the Treasury, under the direction of the Master of the Rolls. So far as we are able to judge, the editor has done the' work put into his hands with judgment and care. To say this is to say all that can be said. The preparation of a text by the collation of mss. Is a task Which requires knowledge and critical feeling; but these qualities do not appear on the surface, and only those who go over the same ground can fairly judge of them. Mr. Brewer will gain no popular applause by what he has done, but he will be te numbered by whoever understands the dificulty of his task, and rill look into the manner of its execution.
