Depression is a serious illness, negatively affecting quality of life mentally, physically, and monetarily of many adults in the United States. Antidepressant medications are commonly prescribed to treat symptoms of depression, but patient adherence rates to antidepressant medications are often low due to negative side-effects, inefficacy, cost, and negative perceptions regarding their use. Alternative and adjunct treatment therapies include vitamin supplement use. B vitamins are considered in depression treatments because of positive impacts on certain mechanisms in the body, including neurotransmitter and mood hormone pathways. This study examined the effect of B vitamin supplementation on depressive symptoms. The study sample consisted of 33 medicated and unmedicated adults living in the Menomonie, Wisconsin area. Participants took a B vitamin supplement daily for 28 days. Presence of depressive symptoms was assessed using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. Dietary assessment of B vitamin intake was made by two, 24-hour food recalls. Results showed there was a significant decrease in depressive symptoms from baseline (M = 31.4, SD = 9.6) and at post-intervention (M = 18.9, SD = 10.4), t(32) = 7.08, p

In the past decade, depression rates have skyrocketed, and one in four Americans will suffer from major depression at some point in their lives. Where have we gone wrong? Dr. Stephen Ilardi sheds light on our current predicament and reminds us that our bodies were never designed for the sleep-deprived, poorly nourished, frenzied pace of twenty-first century life. Inspired by the extraordinary resilience of aboriginal groups like the Kaluli of Papua New Guinea, Dr. Ilardi prescribes an easy-to-follow, clinically proven program that harks back to what our bodies were originally made for and what they continue to need. The Depression Cure program has already delivered dramatic results, helping even those who have failed to respond to traditional medications.

Medication alone does not always cure mental illness completely. Of late more and more research interest albeit not enough has been directed at nutrition and the role it may play in onset and maintenance of the various mental illness. The mental illnesses discussed in this book are depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Prevention and treatment of mental illnesses should encompass adequate supplementation of fatty acids, vitamins and minerals through nutrition. This book focusses mostly on vitamin D3 and omega 3 fatty acids and the role they play in the above mentioned mental illnesses. Also briefly discussed are magnesium, folate and zinc. Impaired cognition which is a component of the above 3 disorders is also discussed. Most of the information found in this book is with respect to depressive disorders. This book is suitable for those intending to advance their knowledge about nutrition and some of its effects on mental health.

Abstract: The effects of nutritional status on mental health and the possibilities of vitamin therapy in treating many forms of mental problems (depression, for example) are presented. The evolution of knowledge about vitamin therapy is traced, interspersed with case histories to support the idea that mental health is partially dependent on nutritional and chemical balance in the body. The specific physical and mental effects of deficiencies or excesses are described for vitamin C, the B-complex, the fat-soluble vitamins and minerals. Other areas of concern discussed include toxic metals, allergies and blood sugar levels.

If you have picked up this book, chances are that you or someone you care about struggles with depression. In addition to feeling depressed, or "down," or "blue," ask yourself the following questions: Do you crave sweets and other carbohydrates, or tend to gain weight? Are you exhausted or tired for no obvious reason? Do you have trouble concentrating or thinking clearly? Are your feelings easily hurt by rejection from others? If you answered "yes" to even one of these questions, you may be suffering from a particular type of depression that does not respond well to most antidepressant drugs. Take heart. There is hope, thanks to a major medical discovery made by longtime psychiatrist Malcolm McLeod of a connection between depression, resistance of the body to insulin, faulty glucose metabolism, and how the trace mineral chromium can dramatically lift depression. Moreover, chromium is a natural treatment that is safe, effective and free of unwanted side effects. Book jacket.
