Vampires are not just imaginary creatures of fiction or legend—they really exist. They are the people who, having never received love, settle for power instead, and become experts at robbing others of their vital energy. We've all known them. In her fascinating study of this dark psychological archetype, Barbara Hort looks to traditional myths as well as to their modern equivalents in literature, theater, and film, following a blood-soaked trail to such unexpected destinations as The Silence of the Lambs, "Snow White," and the Broadway musical Gypsy. She offers insight into how psychic vampires originate, how we allow ourselves to be caught in their clutches, and how we can protect ourselves from their seductive influence.

There are six of them: heroines, heroes, wise elders, mad scientists, servants and monsters. One of the most fascinating and also endearing aspects of horror films is how they use these six clearly defined character types to portray good and evil. This was particularly true of the classics of the genre, where actors often appeared in the same type of role in many different films. The development of the archetypal characters reflected the way the genre reacted to social changes of the time. As the Great Depression yielded to the uncertainty of World War II, flawed but noble mad scientists such as Henry Frankenstein gave way to Dr. Nieman (The Ghost of Frankenstein) with his dreams of revenge and world conquest. This work details the development of the six archetypes in horror films and how they were portrayed in the many classics of the 1930s and 1940s.

An investigation of the modification and transformation of the vampire; contending that the vampire has evolved from a figure of fear to one of domestication and compassion. Researching into vampires and taking into account the historical evolution and contemporary significance this book will explore myth, repressed memories, desires and primordial images giving rise to the archetypal hero that is the modern vampire. With reference to Sigmund Freud's models and using Carl Jung's framework, including the collective i.e. the Shadow, Id, Ego, Superego will be explored in order to investigate this change from 'Beast to Beauty'. Studying cultural archetypes in relation to belief and historical evidence and following Freudian and Jungian approaches to psychoanalysis provides a pragmatic base for understanding the human psyche. The vampire show the evolution from a figure of fear to a figure of compassion and domestication.

The Ordo Dracul is back to the light in response to an awakening thunder we have sensed and felt of so many who seek their own paths to awakening. The Vampire Awakening is a manual to describe to every seeking Vampiric Soul the levels of awareness that lead to the gateway of immortality.Throughout history, the legend and the mystique of the Vampire endures. Why? This is due in no small part to the power of the archetype in the minds of humankind. It is the spirit that is the Vampire and the emergent force that its presence continues to paint within modern day Vampire culture.

Within the recesses of the human psyche lies the realm of the unconscious, an arena reigned over by the multi-dimensional Archetypal Feminine, an aspect of the Great Mother who manifests and projects terrifying images awaiting entry into the domain of human consciousness. Compelled by inherent forces of human unconsciousness as guided by the Archetypal Feminine, the fertile imagination of global civilizations flourished into an overabundance of vampire-like creatures traversing time. Consequently, humankind’s eternal fascination with the vampire’s innumerable manifestations is currently unprecedented, siring newborn progeny at an exponential rate. Kaleidoscopic in scope, vampires and vampire-like creatures run the gamut of human imagination from ancient Babylonian, malevolent spirit-assailants, to contemporary, wisecracking comic relief characterizations distinguishable in weekly TV episodics.

Since the publication of John Polidori’s The Vampyre (1819), the vampire has been a mainstay of Western culture, appearing consistently in literature, art, music (notably opera), film, television, graphic novels and popular culture in general. Even before its entrance into the realm of arts and letters in the early nineteenth century, the vampire was a feared creature of Eastern European folklore and legend, rising from the grave at night to consume its living loved ones and neighbors, often converting them at the same time into fellow vampires. A major question exists within vampire scholarship: to what extent is this creature a product of European cultural forms, or is the vampire indeed a universal, perhaps even archetypal figure? In this collection of sixteen original essays, the contributors shed light on this question. One essay traces the origins of the legend to the early medieval Norse draugr, an “undead” creature who reflects the underpinnings of Dracula, the latter first appearing as a vampire in Anglo-Irish Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, Dracula. In addition to these investigations of the Western mythic, literary and historic traditions, other essays in this volume move outside Europe to explore vampire figures in Native American and Mesoamerican myth and ritual, as well as the existence of similar vampiric traditions in Japanese, Russian and Latin American art, theatre, literature, film, and other cultural productions. The female vampire looms large, beginning with the Sumerian goddess Lilith, including the nineteenth-century Carmilla, and moving to vampiresses in twentieth-century film, literature, and television series. Scientific explanations for vampires and werewolves constitute another section of the book, including eighteenth-century accounts of unearthing, decapitation and cremation of suspected vampires in Eastern Europe. The vampire’s beauty, attainment of immortality and eternal youth are all suggested as reasons for its continued success in contemporary popular culture.

Gracious Wild is the story of Stacey Couch’s incredible journey out of the mundane world of science and reason into the vast shamanic realms of creativity and inspiration. Readers will travel on this intimate exploration of what happens when one woman allows the messengers of nature to guide her. These winged guides wrap her mind up in the mysteries they present, leading her to a richer, more fulfilling life. Stacey’s tale begins on an isolated island where, as a scientist, her main responsibility is to care for a couple dozen foxes in captivity. As a result of a series of ecological tragedies, the fox population is on the verge of extinction and a novel hawk species begins nesting on the island for the first time in recorded history. It is during her time watching the nesting hawks alone in nature that her real quest begins–a series of hawks become her guides; rousing life’s biggest questions like “why am I here?” Gracious Wild weaves Stacey’s relationship with the hawks alongside her study of shamanism with a good deal of information included for those seeking more details about this spiritual path. Stacey’s belief is, “that wild animals are trying to speak and interact with us every day. To listen to them is to listen to that which is divine within each of us. Their calls mirror our own inner calling to a greater purpose.” Gracious Wild offers a vivid and candid tale of a woman who loses then rewrites the meaning of her life at the same time showing readers their own humanity; how being open to spirit messages from animals can provide important and beneficial (life-changing) guidance.
