The European Union is in crisis. Crippled by economic problems, political brinkmanship, and institutional rigidity, the EU faces an increasingly uncertain future. In this compelling essay, leading scholar of European politics, Jan Zielonka argues that although the EU will only survive in modest form - deprived of many real powers - Europe as an integrated entity will grow stronger. Integration, he contends, will continue apace because of European states’ profound economic interdependence, historic ties and the need for political pragmatism. A revitalized Europe led by major cities, regions and powerful NGOs will emerge in which a new type of continental solidarity can flourish. The EU may well be doomed, but Europe certainly is not.

Europe is stumbling from crisis to crisis. The financial and debt crises are endangering the European currency union; referenda in several EU countries show widespread Euroscepticism; the economy is only slowly regaining momentum; unemployment remains high in many Member States; and the refugee crisis has deepened political divisions. We need an answer to the question of how to rescue the Euro and keep Europe together. In this volume, renowned German researchers and leading practitioners provide pragmatic recommendations. Their plea for a democratically legitimized Euro Finance Minister, a new economic approach, a common Eurozone budget, and minimum social standards are the prerequisites for a fair, stable, and prosperous Europe.

The world is facing many great challenges: from pandemics to climate change, and from increasing inequality to the issues surrounding digitalization. In a new and rapidly changing global landscape, Europe must look for solutions to these difficulties to follow up on its impressive decades-long process of integration. Europe has the capacity to chart a progressive course in the world. Our European Future offers solutions to rethink our socioeconomic model in the glare of the environmental and digital transformations; to redefine Europe’s role in the world to contribute to renewed multilateralism; to strengthen investment in public goods; and finally, to re-invent our democratic contract. The book brings together the insights of renowned experts from across Europe, and it should prove a handy guide for any progressive thinker, policymaker or activist, and for any citizen who would like to take part in the necessary democratic debate about our future. This book, edited by Maria João Rodrigues with the collaboration of François Balate, is a first contribution from the Foundation for European Progressives Studies to the Conference on the Future of Europe and beyond.

Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Cultural Studies - European Studies, grade: 2,3, http://www.uni-jena.de/, course: BA.IWK.P2, “Kulturspezifisches Wissen und Handeln Seminar Zielkultur” “Perspectives on Europe“(146262), language: English, abstract: The European Union is faced with interlinked challenges these days, a financial and social crisis together with an economic and political crisis. Likewise, there is a revive of an authoritarian Russia, a return of the `German problem` in form of a European wide austerity policy, the rise of secessionist movements in Scotland, Catalonia, and other regions, a European refugee crisis, the growing of sceptical voices against the European Union all over Europe and the insecurity that comes with the `Brexit`. Thus, the question arises how to overcome the current weakness, this crisis of confidence within the European system. It is widely discussed how the future Europe will look like and what needs to change. It is beyond dispute that something needs to Changes in order to save the European community. The answer could be a loose confederation or a full political integration, a “United States of Europe” with a centralized Power. In this paper, the federal model of the United States of Europe will be discussed, showing of the difficult situation in Europe nowadays and one out of many solutions for the European future. The idea of a federal Europe is not new and returned in the last few years and was widely discussed in politics, media and the public discussion. The further European integration should, referring to most spokesman, be done as a federal state following the model of the United States of America. It is a hypothetical model which cannot be implemented in short time and should be handled as a long-term project. Treaty changes, or even the approach of a constitution, are difficult and need to be well prepared in long political debates and votes. There are some main advocators of the model, especially in politics, to whom I will mainly refer to and create a comprising insight in this visionary concept. The current crisis reflects that something needs to be changed in the system to save Europe and not to lose all the things that have been achieved past years. The subject is not fully researched, reflecting the idea with different manifestations and variations. It is uncertain whether it will ever take place in Europe, and how exactly it would look like. For further european development the final goal of European Unification needs to be defined.

A quiet revolution has been occurring in post-World War II Europe. A world power has emerged across the Atlantic that is recrafting the rules for how a modern society should provide economic security, environmental sustainability, and global stability. In Europe's Promise, Steven Hill explains Europe's bold new vision. For a decade Hill traveled widely to understand this uniquely European way of life. He shatters myths and shows how Europe's leadership manifests in five major areas: economic strength, with Europe now the world's wealthiest trading bloc, nearly as large as the U.S. and China combined; the best health care and other workfare supports for families and individuals; widespread use of renewable energy technologies and conservation; the world's most advanced democracies; and regional networks of trade, foreign aid, and investment that link one-third of the world to the European Union. Europe's Promise masterfully conveys how Europe has taken the lead in this make-or-break century challenged by a worldwide economic crisis and global warming.

The monograph `The Future of the European Union' as well as the publication that precedes it `European Integration: Conditions, Essence and Consequences’ have been compiled as part of the project `Quo vadis Unio? a racja stanu Polski' under the DIALOG research programme between 2019 and 2023. It is the result of contributions by Europeanists, political scientists, lawyers, economists, cultural scholars and historians who study the issues of European integration. The content presented in both publications reflects the research outcomes and views of the individual authors. The first of these publications was designed as an attempt to summarise the integration process to date and its legal and institutional dimension, which is the contemporary European Union. The publication ‘The Future of the European Union’ consists of five parts: `The Concepts of Reforms of the European Union', `The Future Modernisation of the Institutional System of the European Union', `Selected EU Policies – Future Prospects', `The European Union – the External Determinants of Further Development', `The Perspectives on the Theoretical Dimension of European Studies'. We hope that the issues raised in this monograph will be of interest to potential readers, especially academics and students interested in European integration issues. Insight into these issues may also be useful to government officials and NGO activists, as well as to a wide audience interested in European issues. These objectives may be more achievable after reading both of these monographs dedicated to European integration issues.
