In the final years of his life, Chekhov had reached the height of his powers as a dramatist, and also produced some of the stories that rank among his masterpieces. The poignant 'The Lady with the Little Dog' and 'About Love' examine the nature of love outside of marriage - its romantic idealism and the fear of disillusionment. And in stories such as 'Peasants', 'The House with the Mezzanine' and 'My Life' Chekhov paints a vivid picture of the conditions of the poor and of their powerlessness in the face of exploitation and hardship. With the works collected here, Chekhov moved away from the realism of his earlier tales - developing a broader range of characters and subject matter, while forging the spare minimalist style that would inspire such modern short-story writers as Hemingway and Faulkner.

Many are drawn to cheer for the underdog in an event because they want to see the underdog beat the odds. Everyone in life has been told by a doubter that a goal they have in life would be unattainable. Most people know the joyful fulfillment of proving the doubter wrong after they have accomplished the goal. The majority are drawn to the underdog stories in society, careers, sports, and relationships, because, in them, they see a reflection of the belief in their own self. People cherish the underdog who comes out on top. The underdog's tenacious characteristics are what others strive to obtain. The model of the underdog will to never give up in the fight against calamity is captured in ten separate stories. Amputees, athletes, former drug addicts, entrepreneurs, burn victims, veterans, former felons who were wrongly convicted of a crime, victims of racial and sexual abuse, and people who are battling cancer are some of the many people who have pushed back against hardship. The journeys of ten remarkable individuals are shared in this book. Everyone faces unexpected adversity in different moments throughout life. These ten underdogs will provide the hope and inspiration to get you through any situation. It is your time to unleash the underdog spirit within you and find the will to never give up.

A man receives a message from a cell phone swallowed by a fish he's caught. A boy grows antlers that give him athletic prowess. A fiction writer learns about reality by walking into an improv play. 1912. Illustrated. Smith had several careers: engineer, artist, illustrator and short story writer. His success in engineering included planning the foundations for the Statue of Liberty. He traveled frequently to Europe and became known for his portraits and illustration. Smith was an entertaining after-dinner storyteller and in his fifties he decided to commit his stories to paper and is remembered for his Colonel Carter novels. In the volume of stories, Smith explains to the readers that: In the strife of life some men lose place through physical weakness or lost opportunities or impaired abilities; struggle on as they may, they must always be the Under Dog in the fight...These Under Dogs-grave and gay-have always appealed to me. Their stories are printed here in the hope that they may also appeal to you. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

Some of my fondest memories in sports have come from games or situations where the impossible becomes reality. As I watched, I had this feeling that I hoped an unlikely athlete would become the hero ofthe moment or an underdog team could pull out an unexpected victory. Some boys and girls only ever have one opportunity to have this feeling, and we all hope that we can be there to share it with them. This book contains the stories of some of these young athletes. I hope you enjoy reading these stories and get the feeling of why it is fun to Root for the Underdog. Sports have been a big part of my life since my childhood days in Levittown, Pa. I enjoyed baseball from my Little League all the way up to high school. I liked so many sports that I was always busy playing something. In high school I lettered in soccer, tennis and basketball. In the summer I pitched softball for several adult teams. At Kutztown University I concentrated on tennis and basketball. After graduating from college I played on a semi-professional basketball team, the Exeter Black Knights, which won the National Amateur Basketball Championship in 1969. I still enjoy watching sports on television and in person - especially when my grandchildren are participating.
