Welcome to The Travel Club, and our inaugural e-zine! Cue the trumpet blasts and laser displays. You’re now a member not only of what we hope will become the essential club for those who are serious about travel, but of a club within that club – the group of travellers who were there with us from the outset. Thank you for joining us on this journey. In some ways, The Travel Club has been a long burn. We’ve discussed establishing a community of this sort on many occasions, but we’ve never quite got round to doing it. There always seemed something else ahead of it in the queue. Now, as we sit in lockdown, a club like this feels especially important. Of course, your support is hugely precious to us at this time, and we’re so very grateful for it. But first and foremost our aim is to create something special, something with genuine, long-term value. Something you’ll be pleased and proud to be part of. We want this e-zine to focus on travel features with real colour and passion, indulgent articles that represent a ‘warm bath’ of a reading experience. We want you to look forward to receiving it each month. And we want to involve you as far as possible, whether by offering unique competitions to enter and puzzles to solve or simply inviting your feedback on what we could do to make the e-zine better. Welcome to the 12th issue of The Travel Club! A whole year has passed since the pandemic first hit, a year that seems to have gone in a flash while at the same time dragging on forever. The Travel Club was launched in May 2020, back during the early days of the first lockdown. As guidebook sales slumped, we knew that our survival lay in the support of our readers, a community of dedicated travellers. Your support surpassed anything we could have imagined, and that is something for which we will always be grateful. But The Travel Club was never a charitable endeavour. We wanted to create something that offered genuine and long-term value to its members, something that would become a much-loved, essential resource for those who are serious about travel. I hope you feel we’ve succeeded. The e-zine has gone from strength to strength each month, withstories and contributions from far and wide – just take a look at this bumper issue! – and we’ve continued to build the list of exclusive membership benefits and discounts too (many of which will come in handy as the world begins to open up). The Bolsheviks took power in Russia 1917 armed with an ideology centered on the power of the worker. From the beginning, however, Soviet leaders also realized the need for rest and leisure within the new proletarian society and over subsequent decades struggled to reconcile the concept of leisure with the doctrine of communism, addressing such fundamental concerns as what the purpose of leisure should be in a workers' state and how socialist vacations should differ from those enjoyed by the capitalist bourgeoisie.In Club Red, Diane P. Koenker offers a sweeping and insightful history of Soviet vacationing and tourism from the Revolution through perestroika. She shows that from the outset, the regime insisted that the value of tourism and vacation time was strictly utilitarian. Throughout the 1920s and '30s, the emphasis was on providing the workers access to the "repair shops" of the nation's sanatoria or to the invigorating journeys by foot, bicycle, skis, or horseback that were the stuff of "proletarian tourism." Both the sedentary vacation and tourism were part of the regime’s effort to transform the poor and often illiterate citizenry into new Soviet men and women.Koenker emphasizes a distinctive blend of purpose and pleasure in Soviet vacation policy and practice and explores a fundamental paradox: a state committed to the idea of the collective found itself promoting a vacation policy that increasingly encouraged and then had to respond to individual autonomy and selfhood. The history of Soviet tourism and vacations tells a story of freely chosen mobility that was enabled and subsidized by the state. While Koenker focuses primarily on Soviet domestic vacation travel, she also notes the decisive impact of travel abroad (mostly to other socialist countries), which shaped new worldviews, created new consumer desires, and transformed Soviet vacation practices.

BANTUSTAN is an illustrated travelogue, novel, atlas and encyclopedia. It is at once a textbook for independent travel in Africa, an illustrated atlas, a collection of life stories, an intimate confession, a list of little secrets and shame. Alternating between three narrators, it is a story of division, isolation and contact. Bantustans were reservations for Black Africans set up by the apartheid regime; in this book, bantustans refer to the bubbles in which we all live our lives. The three protagonists, as well as the people they encounter along the way, are constantly struggling to escape these multi-layered bubbles - of ego, family, social circle, class, race, religion, ethnicity, language, nationality etc - and establish contact with the rest of the world.
