Excerpt from The Transition Period This volume deals with the main European Literatures of the Fifteenth Century, when, according to critical tradition, the ideals of the mediaeval world were transformed to the fashions of modern art. I have endeavoured in my treatment of the subject to discredit the pleasant fiction, which abides with us too securely, that the change from the Old to the New came suddenly and strangely as at the pass of a harlequin's wand. He who has most carefully tracked the windings and searched the nooks of this Great Valley will best know that there is no square wall and "high somdel," nor even a hedge of "hoked breres," between our Arcady and the Garden of the Rose. Excerpt from Privilege: A Novel of the Transition In conclusion, let me state categorically that privi lege is not a tract for the times. It teaches no lesson, urges no political creed, presents no real people in guise of characters of fiction. It is merely a story, born of the strange allurement of passing greatness, which sets an imaginary love drama against the tapestry of our turbulent and changing England. The characters are at once of their own age and of any age. T heir trousers and their petticoats, their tobacco and their slang are of the twentieth century, but their temptations, and their longings are those of men and women any time this thousand years. Both editor and author have accomplished the work under circumstances of some difficulty; now that it is complete it is hoped that it may prove a serviceable guide to the poetry and prose of an era of which little is generally known. resonances. Nonlinear resonances cause divergences in conventional perturbation expansions. This occurs because nonlinear resonances cause a topological change locally in the structure of the phase space and simple perturbation theory is not adequate to deal with such topological changes. In Sect. (2.3), we introduce the concept of integrability. A sys tem is integrable if it has as many global constants of the motion as degrees of freedom. The connection between global symmetries and global constants of motion was first proven for dynamical systems by Noether [Noether 1918]. We will give a simple derivation of Noether's theorem in Sect. (2.3). As we shall see in more detail in Chapter 5, are whole classes of systems which are now known to be inte there grable due to methods developed for soliton physics. In Sect. (2.3), we illustrate these methods for the simple three-body Toda lattice. It is usually impossible to tell if a system is integrable or not just by looking at the equations of motion. The Poincare surface of section provides a very useful numerical tool for testing for integrability and will be used throughout the remainder of this book. We will illustrate the use of the Poincare surface of section for classic model of Henon and Heiles [Henon and Heiles 1964].

Excerpt from Transition: A Remembrance of Emma Whiting This book is not written to magnify an individual, but to illustrate a principle. Its drift is, to show how a life Which is genial and earnest on earth, may be sacred and safe for the sky -and so, secure the resumption of the real charms Of earth, in Heaven. It is a life, flushing in its brief sojourn, with the earnestness Of this world, but advancing, with marked celerity, towards the next. All the thoughts, here arranged, Whether expressed in verse, or prose, by letter, or by the meditations Of solitude, will be found to take a hearty, happy, hold Of the scenes about us, and to put themselves in sympathy with the most eager and tender sentiments of the young. Excerpt from The Transition Period of California: From a Province of Mexico in 1846 to a State of the American Union in 1850 The writer's home was in Monterey in 1849. It was then the capital of the territory and the head quarters oi the United States army. The governor and his staff resided there, and there were the offices of the civil government. The officers and their employees constituted the larger part of the English-speaking portion of the population, and among them the very important questions concerning a Civil government to take the place of military rule, which was now at an end, were constantly discussed. Although my vocation as a clergyman left me little time to look into these things, I became very much interested in them, and in all that pertained to the history of this new country to which I had come. I took every Opportunity to gather information from those who had been long residents here, and carefully preserved such historical papers and documents as fell into my hands. All the events that led up to the calling of the convention which formed the state constitution in September, 1849, were familiar to me, and being connected with that body as chaplain, all its proceedings were familiar also. I never had time, however, in a busy life that followed, to make any use of the historical materials that had accumulated by the way, till within a few years past. Then, in looking over events in the past perspective, it seemed clear to me that the transition of California from its connection with Mexico to become one of the United States of America, especially at the time at which this took place, and under the unprecedented circumstances which surrounded it, and in view of the amazing consequences that followed, made it an event that ought to be considered by itself. Excerpt from England in Transition, 1789-1832: A Study of Movements AT the close of the eighteenth century England was emerging from a survival of mediaeval conditions into the latest phase of its modern life. The French Revolu tion contributed materially to this process, not as the parent of democracy which in England was of earlier and native growth, but because it called in question the permanence of all institutions and re - constituted politics on a conservative and a liberal basis. In the reaction caused by this event forces hitherto little more than latent in the Church were roused to an activity which under Evangelical or sacerdotal auspices has continued ever since the first popular agitation directed\. To a wholly humanitarian aim was at the same time in. Progress and lastly, the industrial organisation, urban and rural, with all that this meant to the mass of the people, was then being moulded into its present shape. It need hardly be said that none of these forces - political, religious, philanthropic and social - had sprung suddenly into being; and our first task must be to trace and account for their growth.
