After attending the local schools of his county he entered the academic department of Washington and Inc University, where he graduated and received the high and honorable degree of Bachelor of Arts. Upon the completion of his academic studies he returned to his native State and engaged in the study of the law, and was admitted to practice in 1872. As a member of the bar he assumed the high rank to which his attainments and lofty character entitled him, and for sixteen years successfully followed the practice of the law. In 1888 he was elected judge of the Twenty-first Judicial District of Texas, and in 1890 he was appointed a member of the Commission of Appeals of Texas, which position he held until he was elected to the chief justiceship of this court.
