Excerpt from The Tertiary of Montana The anterior alveolus is the largest, is nearly circular, and appears to have held a canine tooth. It extends backward and outward toward the orbit. Its posi tion is indicated by a curved ridge on the maxillary. The second and third alveoli are nearly equal in size but the fourth, fifth, and sixth diminish in size posteriorly, the last containing a minute tooth. The second, third, and fourth alveoli appear to be antero-internally and postero-externally oblique and it appears on the outside of the maxillary that the roots 'of the second and third extend obliquely backward in the same direction as the supposed canine. Excerpt from Fossil Mammalia of the White River Beds of Montana, And, the Tertiary of Montana Since writing my paper on the Tertiary deposits of western Montana further explorations have been made and many valuable fossils secured. Part of these fossils have been studied under more favorable circumstances, so that interesting additions can now be made to our knowledge of these beds. In J une, 1899, Prof. F. D. Smith, of the University of Montana, and myself started eastward from Missoula with team and camping outfit, he to collect geological specimens for the University and I to make further explorations in the Tertiary deposits, and to add, if possible, to my collection of fossil mammals. Nearly all of my previous collecting had been done east of the main divide or watershed of the Rocky Mountains. I had found that Tertiary deposits occurred in the valleys of Flint and Deer Lodge creeks, and it was hoped that enough fossils might be obtained to determine the horizons of these beds and their relation to those east of the divide. Excerpt from Flora of the Montana Formation It was not possible, in the limited time at our disposal, to attempt i trace the connection between this locality and the one just discusse: and it is doubtful if it can be done, for the exposures are extreme. Limited and the country much obscured by overlying material. The is every reason to suppose, however, that the two localities are near if not quite in the same horizon, aview which finds support in the fa that at least two of the species of plants are common to both.
