Metastasis and angiogenesis in cancer are dependent on a variety of biologically active compounds including serine protease. Inhibition of proteases such as plasmin is a potential route for suppression of both metastasis and angiogenesis. Synthesis of tetrahydrothiopyran-4-one based inhibitors containing either a dialkylamino chain, a lysine analog side chain and a dipeptide (D-ile-phe or D-ile-Trp), or just the D-ile-phe dipeptide was accomplished. A compound with both the lysine analog side chain and the dipeptide but lacking a carbonyl was also produced.

Serpins are a group of proteins with similar structures that were first identified as a set of proteins able to inhibit proteases. This volume in the Methods in Enzymology series comprehensively covers this topic. With an international board of authors, this volume covers subjects such as Crystallography of serpins and serpin complexes, Serpins as hormone transporters, and Production of serpins using cell free systems.
