Excerpt from The Sword Unsheathed In this critical period of the world's history, when wars and rumors of wars are as common as the partaking of our daily bread, every patriotic individual is anxious to do his bit to bring to a final and successful issue the momentous world struggle which should not be settled - and Please God, will not be settled - until peace and righteousness prevail, and when all national disputes will be adjudicated Without recourse to the arbitrament of arms. Since this Country was plunged into the vortex of war, I have, occasionally, in moments of recreation, jotted down my thoughts in rhyme, and given them to the public, hoping that something I might write would cheer some drooping heart, or bring a smile to some sad face. Having accumulated quite a bundle of material, and being urged by friends to do so, I have concluded to offer my productions in the form of a book, dedi cating it to the Soldier Boys of America and the Boys of the Allied Nations of the world, who are fighting, and are willing to fight to the bitter end, so that tyranny may be stamped out and justice prevail. Excerpt from The Sword Unsheathed, or the Bible for the Masses This session of the Ministerial Association of Southeast Ohio Conference was a grateful recognition of the blessings of three hundred years of the English Bible. All the interest centered in the Word of God, and in its dis tribution to the masses. The open Bible and the uplifted cross were the parallel needs set forth, in harmony with the expressed con viction of many similar assemblies which are at least partly celebrational of the greatest gift to the English-speaking people. Excerpt from The Flaming Sword At the head of the table, stretched in his chair, his head hanging loosely on one shoulder, his mouth gaping, sprawled a stoutish young man, in evening dress. His arms depended loosely over the chair-arm, and the fin gers of one hand, swollen below his jeweled rings, still held the end of an extinguished cigar. The candles near est him had gone out and the gray light from the win dow painted his livid face against the somber background with pitiless precision. Beside him, in another chair, the red spots in her face making its pallor and texture the more apparent, sat a girl, staring with dull eyes into vacancy.
