The Indian Sufi master Hazrat Inayat Khan (1882–1927) was the first teacher to bring Sufism—Islamic mysticism—to the Western world. His teaching was noted for its stirring beauty and power, as well as for its applicability to all people, regardless of religious or philosophical background. This book gathers together three of Inayat Khan's most beloved essays on the spiritual life from among the fourteen volumes of his collected works: "The Inner Life": Inayat Kahn's sublime portrait of the person whose life is a radiant reflection of the Divine "Sufi Mysticism": in which the author identifies and shatters the common misconceptions about mysticism to reveal its true meaning "The Path of Initiation and Discipleship": What it means to set out on the spiritual path and how to find and maintain the right relationship with a teacher

The first teacher to bring Islamic mysticism to the West presents music’s divine nature and its connection to our daily lives in this poetic classic of Sufi literature. Music, according to Sufi teaching, is really a small expression of the overwhelming and perfect harmony of the whole universe—and that is the secret of its amazing power to move us. The Indian Sufi master Hazrat Inayat Khan (1882–1927), the first teacher to bring the Islamic mystical tradition to the West, was an accomplished musician himself. His lucid exposition of music's divine nature has become a modern classic, beloved not only by those interested in Sufism but by musicians of all kinds.

Hazrat Inayat Khan was an Indian Sufi mystic who came to the West in 1910. His teachings, The Sufi Message, emphasize the divinity of the soul and the experience of unity of being and unity of religious ideals. The teachings show how Sufism can harmonize eastern and western culture. The process of such harmonization is fairly complex and raises very fundamental questions about eastern values in western society, of Sufism in the West. The book examines the forty-year period after the passing away of Hazrat Inayat Khan in 1927, during which his brothers Maheboob Khan (1887-1948), Mohammed Ali Khan (1881-1958) and Musharaff Kahn (1895-1967) followed Hazrat Inayat Khan as leaders of his organization, the Sufi Movement. It studies how they maintained and spread the teachings and how each one of them influenced the organization, and its adherents, in their own way according to their own personality, education and mystical realization. At the same time, the book offers perspectives on leadership succession and issues pertaining to tensions between eastern and western culture and history, social discontinuity, e.g., the problem of hierarchy versus democracy, and the relationship between mysticism and psycho-spiritual development.

The Art of Personality contains Inayat Khan's teachings on the discovery and creation of personality as a development of individuality, and also on character building, which is described as the very substance of Sufism and leads to the rebirth of the soul. Also included are previously unpublished lectures on personality, art, and aesthetics. In a realized person- ality, the soul expresses its divine inheritance through its thoughts, words, and actions, and creations. "We can create new conditions, not make them worse. We are the world, we must know the value of our soul, our responsibilities. The Sufi purpose is to awaken the consciousness of these things in humanity. Our spirit can make us recognize what we are, and what the work of this life should be." - Hazrat Inayat Khan
