The Proterozoic terrains of South Scandinavia and the Grenville Province in North-America have many common features : Regional high grade metamorphism (Granulite-facies), anorthosites, etc. They are separated by the Caledonian orogeny and, above all, by the Atlantic Ocean. During the time of the great continental drift controversy, few people were ready to admit that both sides on the Atlantic were once an unique province. Now everybody agrees on the Post-paleozoic age of the Atlantic and, consequently, on the intrinsic homogeneity of the much older. rocks which occur around it. But a detailed comparison is not easy. The Grenville Province is much larger than South Scandinavia, both regions have been investigated by a great number of different schools, using various methods, approaches and concepts. After several attempts, and long discussion, it was felt by a small group of individuals, that literature study would not be enough and that nothing could re place the direct contact, in the field, of specialists who had a first hand knowledge of all involved regions. The formula of a NATO Advanced Study Institute, which gives a unique opportunity to meet and mix people of various origin and levels, came almost by itself. Much work was needed, much help has been obtained, as detailed in the "Acknowledgements".

The Sognefjord transect through the Lower to Middle Paleozoic Caledonian orogenic belt in southern Norway provides a superb and exceptionally well-documented example of late collisional, Alpine-type tectonics. This field guide is the first synthesis of the region to include detailed locality descriptions.

On the evening of 11th June 1979, the 35 ton motor cutter "K. J. V. Steenstrup", belonging to the Geological Survey of Greenland, anchored in a small bay at Tovqussap nuna, West Greenland. On board were nine members of the JUGS Commission on Tectonics and Subcommission on Precambrian Structural Type Regions. For the next 24 hours a strong gale and snow forced the members to stay below deck, and while being rocked by the swell reflected from the nearby cliffs of two-pyroxene diorite at Verdens Begyndelse ("Beginning of the World" - see Medd. am Gr0nland 123, plate 1), this small group of tectonic "officials" decided to initiate the production of a book to be entitled "Precambrian Tectonics Illustrated". Needless to say, a copy of the magnificent book " Geology of Greenland", published three years earlier by the Geological Survey of Greenland, was lying in front of us on the oak table in the small crowded cabin. H. H. Read once said: "Map it my boy and it will all come out". But don't forget what James Gilluly added: "Most exposures provide answers only to questions that are put to them". With this in mind - "bon appetit".

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Earth Science / Geography - General, Basics, grade: 95%, Ruhr-University of Bochum (Institute of MIneralogy), course: Structural Geology, language: English, abstract: This assignment exhibits the period since Earth has formed until boundary conditions and tectonics started to stabilize. This period is called Precambrian and consists the 7/8 of Earth’s history. Precambrian lasts 3,9 Ga and is separated into three Eons, Hadean, Archean and Proterozoic with respect to time occurrence. Earth loses heat through time due to gradually decrease in decay of radiogenic isotopes which are dispersed into the core, mantle and continental crust. Therefore, Earth composition and tectonics distinctly change. Tectonics generally change from vertical patterns to horizontal and the continental crust forms until the end of the Precambrian to the 82% of the overall crust, covering Earth now. Moreover, different movements of Supercontinents which fragmented, dispersed and collided where studied through geological, paleomagnetic and paleoclimatic studies.

Since 1964, the time when the Upper Mantle Project was started, the Precambrian continental crust has been studied in considerable detail in many areas. Multidisciplinary studies, using modern tools and techniques have resulted in increasing levels of accuracy. The Precambrian continental crust has been subjected to several thermal events and multiple episodes of deformation. These events have obliterated the scenario produced by early events and present-day efforts are directed towards evaluating the cause-effect processes of each event. How far back the known geological processes of the Phanerozoic can be extended into the Precambrian is one of the main questions. The present volume provides data and interpretations which will help in formulating the answer to some of these questions. The book contains 30 contributions resulting from researches on almost all the important Precambrian terranes.
