In the small hours of Sunday September 24 1916 the conflict with the German foe suddenly came much closer to the sleepy hamlet of Little Wigborough. The downing of the giant Zeppelin L33 and the capture of its crew was a cause of great excitement, with thousands traveling from the from the surrounding villages and beyond to gaze in wonder at the wrecked leviathan. The loss of the Zeppelin L33, together with the L32 on a single night in September 1916 arguably marked a turning point in the strategic bombing campaign against Great Britain by the Imperial German Airship Division. Henceforth the defending forces held the upper hand. This book describes in detail the Zeppelin L33's only operational flight, followed by a brief account of the German Navy Airship Division's strategic bombing campaign during the final two years of the Great War.

Mick Powis describes the novel threat posed to the British war effort by the raids of German airships, or Zeppelins, and the struggle to develop effective defenses against them. Despite their size and relatively slow speed, the Zeppelins were hard to locate and destroy at first. They could fly higher than existing fighters and the early raids benefited from a lack of coordination between British services. The development of radio, better aircraft, incendiary ammunition, and, above all, a more coordinated defensive policy, gradually allowed the British to inflict heavy losses on the Zeppelins. The innovative use of seaplanes and planes launched from aircraft carriers allowed the Zeppelins to be intercepted before they reached Britain and to strike back with raids on the Zeppelin sheds. July 1918 saw the RAF and Royal Navy cooperate to destroy two Zeppelins in their base at Tondern (the first attack by aircraft launched from a carrier deck). The last Zeppelin raid on England came in August 1918 and resulted in the destruction of Zeppelin L70 and the death of Peter Strasser, Commander of the Imperial German Navys Zeppelin force.

This is a thorough first person account of zeppelins, their history and flights. This book was being translated by Leonhard Adelt, who was on board with Lehmann as a guest during the Hindenburg's last flight. The book had recently been published in German when the Hindenburg was destroyed. The English translation, completed by Jay Dratler, was published in 1937 with a preface and closing chapter by American airship captain Charles E. Rosendahl, who had interviewed Lehman on his deathbed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernst_A._Lehmann

The author of this book, Ernst A. Lehmann, was close to the Zeppelin story from its early days and had great faith in the ever increasing success of the Zeppelin on international routes. It is sadly ironic that this talented man and strong advocate of the Zeppelin should die in Hindenburg disaster shortly after he had produced the draft for this book. He died following the fire that destroyed the Hindenburg on 6 May 1937; he survived the fire itself but was badly burned and died the following day. Lehmann was a Zeppelin commander during the First World War bombing England on numerous occasions, and even met some of the supreme German commanders such as General Erich Ludendorff. He was well acquainted with Count Zeppelin and all of the designers and management of the Zeppelin Company. After the war he worked for the Zeppelin Company under Hugo Eckener, who took over the management following Count Zeppelin's death in 1917. Lehmann was closely involved in the voyages of the Graf Zeppelin, including the famous round the world voyage, and pioneered services to the Unites States and the regular service to South America. Lehmann makes his Nazi sympathies quite clear, but tactfully does not touch upon his differences with Hugo Eckener regarding the use of the airships for Nazi electioneering-for Eckener was strongly against it. Nor does he touch upon Gring's maneuvering which broke up the Zeppelin Company, thereby leaving Eckener as an outsider. He believes in the superiority of German engineering and beyond that the superiority of everything German. Lehmann served as commanding officer on more than 100 of the flights of the Graf Zeppelin between 1928 and 1936. In 1935, when Hermann Gring created the Deutsche Zeppelin Reederei to increase Nazi influence over Zeppelin operations, Captain Lehmann was named director of the new airline. In 1936, he commanded 10 round-trip flights to Lakehurst on the new Hindenburg. The text is well-written, approachable, and provides a comprehensive account of the Zeppelin story until the 1937 disaster which cost the author his life.

Written in 1922 by Harry Vissering, the director of the Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation, Zeppelin recounts the life and work of Count Zeppelin (1838-1917). One of the first Americans to show interest in the building and operation of Zeppelin aircraft, Harry Vissering never met their namesake. Yet his remarkable book is a fitting tribute to the Count, who built 127 dirigibles during his lifetime. In addition to descriptive text, the book includes nearly 100 rare photographs and line drawings detailing the history, construction and operation of these remarkable craft. Born July 8, 1838, in Konstanz, Prussia, Ferdinand von Zeppelin was educated as a military officer and entered the Prussian army in 1858. He traveled to the United States during the Civil War, and was introduced to balloons and balloon technology by the American inventor Thaddeus S.C. Lowe. After a stint as an observer for the Union Army, he explored the Mississippi River. He later served in the Franco-Prussian War and retired in 1891 with the rank of brigadier general. Zeppelin spent nearly a decade developing the dirigible, completing his first in 1900. By 1910, a zeppelin provided the first commercial air service for passengers. By his death in 1917, he had built a fleet of airships including military craft which bombed London during WWI. In the 1920s and 30s, zeppelins captured the attention of the world. The Graf Zeppelin flew over a million miles, including a flight around the world and another over the arctic. Yet the Hindenburg disaster of 1937 spelled the end of Zeppelin's dream.

'It burst into flames! ... It's burning, bursting into flames and it's - and it's falling on the mooring mast and ... this is terrible. This is one of the worst catastrophes in the world.'On 6 May 1937 the pioneering Zeppelin Hindenburg, LZ-129, ended its career in flames when its hydrogen lifting gas ignited while landing at Lakehurst, New Jersey. But the airship had already completed sixty-two successful flights before this fateful day, catering to Nazi officials, socialites and the well heeled. Hindenburg offered cutting-edge transport technology with luxury and style, making it a spectacle to behold on both sides of the Atlantic, and was expected to be just the first of many giant passenger Zeppelins.Three world-renowned experts have collaborated to create the definitive history of the Zeppelin Hindenburg, using stunning black-and-white and colour photographs, rare ephemera and detailed diagrams to highlight the sheer style of this mammoth lighter-than-air craft and explain the shocking disaster that signalled the end of airship travel.
