The 2020 edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture has a particular focus on sustainability. This reflects a number of specific considerations. First, 2020 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (the Code). Second, several Sustainable Development Goal indicators mature in 2020. Third, FAO hosted the International Symposium on Fisheries Sustainability in late 2019, and fourth, 2020 sees the finalization of specific FAO guidelines on sustainable aquaculture growth, and on social sustainability along value chains. While Part 1 retains the format of previous editions, the structure of the rest of the publication has been revised. Part 2 opens with a special section marking the twenty fifth anniversary of the Code. It also focuses on issues coming to the fore, in particular, those related to Sustainable Development Goal 14 and its indicators for which FAO is the “custodian” agency. Special focus: Effects of the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824 on Maritime Trade Around the Straits of Malacca and Nearby Region Description: This article is written with an aim to review and study the British strategies used during the colonisation of Malaya, which led to successful signing of several treaties that greatly benefitted the British East India Company (EIC). The Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824 was among the treaties that had a huge impact not only on the British, but also the people of Malaysia and Singapore, where the benefits are still enjoyed to this day. In two years (2024), it will be the 200th anniversary of the treaty signed between the Dutch and British. After nearly two centuries, the British colonisation strategies in Singapore through the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824 were found to have truly helped the development of the country, the Straits of Malacca, as well as the surrounding regions. The conservation, sustainable use and development of aquatic genetic resources (AqGR) is critical to the future supply of fish. The State of the World’s Aquatic Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture is the first ever global assessment of these resources, with the scope of this first Report being limited to cultured AqGR and their wild relatives, within national jurisdiction. The Report draws on 92 reports from FAO member countries and five specially commissioned thematic background studies. The reporting countries are responsible for 96 percent of global aquaculture production. The Report sets the context with a review of the state of world’s aquaculture and fisheries and includes overviews of the uses and exchanges of AqGR, the drivers and trends impacting AqGR and the extent of ex situ and in situ conservation efforts. The 2022 edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture coincides with the launch of the Decade of Action to deliver the Global Goals, the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. It presents how these and other equally important United Nations events, such as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022), are being integrated and supported through Blue Transformation, a priority area of FAO’s new Strategic Framework 2022–2031 designed to accelerate achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in food and agriculture. The concept of Blue Transformation emerged from the Thirty-fourth Session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries in February 2021, and in particular the Declaration for Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture, which was negotiated and endorsed by all FAO Members. The Declaration calls for support for “an evolving and positive vision for fisheries and aquaculture in the twenty first century, where the sector is fully recognized for its contribution to fighting poverty, hunger and malnutrition.” In this context, Part 1 of this edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture reviews the world status of fisheries and aquaculture, while Parts 2 and 3 are devoted to Blue Transformation and its pillars on intensifying and expanding aquaculture, improving fisheries management and innovating fisheries and aquaculture value chains. The fisheries of China generate the largest catch in the world. However, these fisheries are in generally bad shape, notably due to lack of management systems based on rigorous studies on the dynamics of major stocks exploited by the fisheries of China and neighboring countries. This could be mitigated, at least in part, by the systematic application of newly developed methods for evaluating the status of exploited fish stocks for use in data-sparse situations, focusing on methods for estimating maximum sustainable yield (MSY) from catch informed by a combination of biological knowledge on the species (intrinsic rate of population increase, r, and carrying capacity, k) and what is known about the stock, for instance relative abundance indicators, e.g., catch per unit of effort. The aim of this Research Topic is to create an outlet for the studies that will result from the application of these modern methods to exploited stocks of East Asian marine fish, encouraging the rigorous evaluation of these stocks and providing a basis for their rebuilding, as required especially for Chinese stocks. This would lead to the creation of a cadre of fishery scientists knowledgeable in using the methods in question and interested in collaborating with colleagues in other regions with similar issues. Focusing on East Asia will reinforce to readers in `the West' that these fisheries are not a sideshow to the more interesting fisheries in Europe or North America, but a major source of seafood for people in East Asia. Indeed, the failure of these domestic fisheries would increase the impacts of distant-water fisheries from East Asia in other parts of the world.
