Figuier's Opinions have been retained as far as possible, but where necessary the work has been harmonised with the accepted results of modern scientific generalisation and research. His opinions and statements have often' been allowed to stand unaltered, even when doubtful. It was only when they were obviously and glaringly erroneous or antiquated, that the Editor of this work felt justified in modifying them.
