The plots of many films pivot on the moment when a dowdy girl with bad hair, ill-fitting outdated clothing, and thick glasses is changed into an almost unrecognizable glamour girl. Makeover scenes such as these are examined beginning with 1942's Now, Voyager. The study examines whether the film makeover is voluntary or involuntary, whether it is always successful, how much screen time it takes up, where in the narrative structure it falls, and how the scene is actually filmed. Films with a Pygmalion theme, such as My Fair Lady, Vertigo, and Shampoo, are examined in terms of gender relations: whether the man is content with his creation and what sort of woman is the ideal. Some films' publicity capitalizes on a glamorous star's choice to play an unattractive character, as discussed in a chapter examining stars like Bette Davis, Meryl Streep, and Cameron Diaz. Topics also include folk literature's Cinderella tale, men as the inspiration for makeovers in teen flicks films like Clueless, She's All That, and Me, Natalie, and class repositioning in such movies as Working Girl, Pretty Woman, and Grease. Photographs are presented in a before/after format, showing the change in the madeover character.

The Annual Review of Women in World Religions is polymethodic, interdisciplinary, and multitraditional in its approach to the study of women and religion. It not only allows the comparative dimension to appear in bolder relief, but also helps establish a dialogue between the two solitudes of humanistic and social scientific studies in the field. This annual encourages the exploration of horizons and perspectives in women's studies not possible otherwise. It is not confined in scope to the traditional religions--it also includes new religious movements within its scope, while at the same time providing an outlet for specialized studies on women in traditional religions to reach a wider audience. It thus incorporates both the traditional and contemporary dimension. This work grew out of the publication of a book released in 1987 by SUNY Press entitled Women in World Religions, edited by Arvind Sharma. The reception indicated that it met a felt need. It also vindicated the historical and phenomenological approach to the study of women in world religions. The relevance of both subject and method called for an ongoing forum to continue discussing themes covered in the book. this journal provides such a forum. The first volume contains essays by Mary Gerhart (Another Troy for Her to Burn: The True Story of Euripides's Helen), Denyse Rockey (Three Faces of the Great Goddess: Shulamite, Cinderella, Black Virgin), Winnie Tomm (Goddess Consciousness and Social Realities: The 'Permeable Self'), and Katherine K. Young (Goddesses, Feminists, and Scholars).

The musical history of Hollywood and the Academy Awards goes back to 1934, when "The Continental" from The Gay Divorcee won the first Oscar for Best Original Song. Since then, Oscar-nominated songs have come from every genre, including dance numbers, serious compositions, and rock and roll. Author Sackett lists the songs nominated each year through 1993, listing lyricists and composers, the film each appeared in, and historical information and inside anecdotes. Appendixes list title songs, films that songs have been nominated from, most Oscar nominations by lyricist (first is Sammy Cahn with 26) and by composer (James Van Heusen, 14), and other Oscar factoids.
