In recent months, the term metaverse has become the newest buzzword in the crypto and gaming space, and start-ups venturing into metaverse have been mushrooming around the globe. These start-ups were able to attract investments from angel investors and VCs. The biggest news this year was the direct listing of Roblox on the New York Stock Exchange in which the company’s stock closed at $69.50 per share, giving the company a market cap of $38.26 billion. Another sensational story was Epic Games, the company that built Unreal Engine and the popular metaverse game Fortnite. At the time of writing, Epic Games has just completed a $1 billion round of funding to support the long-term vision for the metaverse. But all these developments paled in comparison to Facebook changed its name to Meta on 29th Oct 2021, boldly announced its official entry into the metaverse. This was a game-changing milestone, which not only showed that Zuckerberg has continuously strengthened his worldview that "the metaverse is the next stop of the Internet", but also raised the metaverse to the same level of ambition as Musk’s vision of colonizing Mars and Google’s project to radically extend the human lifespan. Though metaverses have existed for more than two decades particularly in the gaming space like the famous Second Life, Fortnite, Roblox and more, it was neither widely known nor adopted outside the gaming industry. However, with the meteoric rise of the DeFi and NFT applications in the last two years, metaverse suddenly became a buzzword as metaverse platforms were mushrooming by integrating DeFi and NFT into GameFi to create sensational 3D VR experiences and allow users to monetize while playing (aka Play to Earn). Besides gaming, the latest trend shows that there is immense potential in business and commercial metaverse applications. Ten laws of simplicity for business, technology, and design that teach us how to need less but get more. Finally, we are learning that simplicity equals sanity. We're rebelling against technology that's too complicated, DVD players with too many menus, and software accompanied by 75-megabyte "read me" manuals. The iPod's clean gadgetry has made simplicity hip. But sometimes we find ourselves caught up in the simplicity paradox: we want something that's simple and easy to use, but also does all the complex things we might ever want it to do. In The Laws of Simplicity, John Maeda offers ten laws for balancing simplicity and complexity in business, technology, and design—guidelines for needing less and actually getting more. Maeda—a professor in MIT's Media Lab and a world-renowned graphic designer—explores the question of how we can redefine the notion of "improved" so that it doesn't always mean something more, something added on. Maeda's first law of simplicity is "Reduce." It's not necessarily beneficial to add technology features just because we can. And the features that we do have must be organized (Law 2) in a sensible hierarchy so users aren't distracted by features and functions they don't need. But simplicity is not less just for the sake of less. Skip ahead to Law 9: "Failure: Accept the fact that some things can never be made simple."
