Excerpt from The Shepherd King These sermons are published at the suggestion of friends in Churches formerly served by the author, and also upon the request of the Official Board of First Methodist Episcopal Church, Seattle, Washington. They are presented to the public in the present form with no small degree of hesitancy, but with an earnest prayer that the printed words may retain something, at least, of the blessed influence they exerted at the time they were spoken. Excerpt from The Shepherd of the Hills: A Novel This, my story, is the story of a man who took the trail that leads to the lower ground, and of a woman, and how She found her way to the higher sunlit fields. In the story, it all happened in the Ozark Moun tains, many miles from what we of the city call civilization. In life, it has all happened many, many times before, in many, many places. The two trails lead afar. The story, so very old, is still in the telling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Good Shepherd Benedikt was always alone on this Advent Journey of his - that is, no man went with him. To be sure he had his dog along and his bell-wether. The dog he had at this time was called Leo, and as Benedikt put it, he earned his name, for truly he was a Pope among dogs. The wether was named Gnarly; that was because he was so tough. Excerpt from The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come The days of that April had been days of mist and rain. Sometimes, for hours, there would come a miracle of blue sky, white cloud, and yellow light, but always between dark and dark the rain would fall and the mist creep up the mountains and steam from the tops - only to roll together from either range, drip back into the valleys, and lift, straightway, as mist again. So that, all the while Nature was trying to give lustier life to every living thing in the lowland Bluegrass, all the while a gaunt skeleton was stalking down the Cumberland - tapping with fleshless knuckles, now at some unlovely cottage of faded white and green, and now at a log cabin, stark and gray. Passing the mouth of Lonesome, he flashed his scythe into its unlifting shadows and went stalking on. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The name "David" is so popular in modern society and culture that virtually everyone knows someone christened with this appellation. But not all given this name remain unforgotten for thousands of years, unlike the main subject of David: Shepherd, Psalmist, King. Famously regarded in the Bible as "a man after his [God's] own heart" and a direct antecendant of the Messiah, the second king of Israel is a person of many talents and skills. He is also credited as the author of most of the hymns, songs, and praises contained in the Book of Psalms. As such, he is one of the most important and dominant characters in the Holy Scriptures, which is why he is a subject worth writing about. And this is exactly what Rev. F. B. Meyer did. This book, published in 1910, is the author's way of putting a magnifying glass on David's life and examining his journey from a lowly shepherd to a legendary and great King. Aside from a more elaborate narrative of events that already have been revealed in the Bible and in other related literature, Rev. Meyer provided his own commentaries and explanations on various points along the story of the Israeli King. He also added Biblical verses referring to the subject, as well as quotes and literary excerpts from various sources that refer to David. Those who are engaged in Bible studies, as well as those interested in enriching their spiritual lives, will benefit from this inspired work. Those who wish to learn more about the most famous and revered David of them all will find this volume fitting and interesting reading. Excerpt from The Shepherd: A Book of Ballads and Songs HE shepherd left his flock, and then the steep T Ascending, heard low music Of the fells Distantly chiming, as a sound that swells And falls unheeded on a world asleep. Cold to his heart, and faint, and lost, and dim His mountain-home and all its wonders lay. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. After the pharaoh of Egypt suddenly awakens and sits up in bed, sweat drips from his body. Continually plagued by horrifying nightmares, Rahotep is once again shaken to his core. While pacing the palace halls in the dark of the night, he wonders what is happening to him. The dreams surely carry a message from someone. Unfortunately, he has no idea of the source of the important message. Desperate to have his dreams interpreted, Rahotep is visited by Joseph, a faithful Hebrew servant who is rumored to have the gift of foretelling catastrophic events. When Joseph tells him what is to come in the future, Rahotep proclaims Joseph to be second in command of his kingdom. Meanwhile in the Palace of Knossos, the Minoan bull-leapers are preparing for their tournaments. But it is not long before a chain of archeological events, devastating famines, and ruinous plagues overshadow the land and instigate a Hebrew exodus. The Shepherd Kings is a voyage back to a time of pharaohs and prophets and tragedy and triumph that brings an ancient story to life.
