Frederick Schiller Faust (1892-1944) was an American fiction author known primarily for his thoughtful and literary Westerns. Faust wrote mostly under pen names, and today he is primarily known by one, Max Brand. Others include George Owen Baxter, Martin Dexter, Evin Evans, David Manning, Peter Dawson, John Frederick, and Pete Morland. Faust was born in Seattle. He grew up in central California and later worked as a cowhand on one of the many ranches of the San Joaquin Valley. Faust attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he began to write frequently. During the 1910s, Faust started to sell stories to the many emerging pulp magazines of the era. In the 1920s, Faust wrote furiously in many genres, achieving success and fame, first in the pulps and later in the upscale "slick" magazines. His love for mythology was, however, a constant source of inspiration for his fiction and his classical and literary inclinations. The classical influences are particularly noticeable in his first novel The Untamed (1919), which was also made into a motion picture starring Tom Mix in 1920. (less)

Written under one of the many pen-names of talented American author Frederick Schiller Faust, The Seventh Man by Max Brand is a compelling and action packed Western that is nevertheless unique to its genre. At so many points during this captivating tale we find ourselves rooting for the villainous and heroic alike as Brand leads the reader on a rollercoaster of a journey. A truly stunning work with much focus on the relationship between man and beast, this tale of vengeance had us gasping for air, vice-like grip on the book (or, in this case, e-book reader) unyielding and woe betide the bringer of any interruption such as the hollow distractions of food or sleep. We really, really liked The Seventh Man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Seven Military Classics is one of the most profound studies of warfare ever written, a stanchion in sinological and military history. It presents an Eastern tradition of strategic thought that emphasizes outwitting one's opponent through speed, stealth, flexibility, and a minimum of force -- an approach very different from that stressed in the West. Safeguarded for centuries by the ruling elite of imperial China, even in modern times these writings have been known only to a handful of Western specialists. This volume contains seven separate essays, written between 500 BCE and 700 CE, that preserve the essential tenets of strategy distilled from the experience of the most brilliant warriors of ancient China.

In A Seventh Man, John Berger and Jean Mohr come to grips with what it is to be a migrant worker -- the material circumstances and the inner experience -- and, in doing so, reveal how the migrant is not so much on the margins of modern life, but absolutely central to it. First published in 1975, this finely-wrought exploration remains as urgent as ever, presenting a mode of living that pervades the countries of the West and yet is excluded from much of its culture.

"Other men are lenses through which we read our own minds." ― Ralph Waldo Emerson, Representative Men Representative Men is a collection of seven lectures by Ralph Waldo Emerson, published as a book of essays in 1850. The first essay discusses the role played by "great men" in society, and the remaining six each extol the virtues of one of six men deemed by Emerson to be great. Emerson was inspired by the Romantic belief that there exists a "general mind" that expresses itself with special intensity through certain individual lives. It reflects an appreciation of genius as a quality distributed to the few for the benefit of the many.

The Anarchist Cookbook will shock, it will disturb, it will provoke. It places in historical perspective an era when "Turn on, Burn down, Blow up" are revolutionary slogans of the day. Says the author" "This book... is not written for the members of fringe political groups, such as the Weatherman, or The Minutemen. Those radical groups don't need this book. They already know everything that's in here. If the real people of America, the silent majority, are going to survive, they must educate themselves. That is the purpose of this book." In what the author considers a survival guide, there is explicit information on the uses and effects of drugs, ranging from pot to heroin to peanuts. There i detailed advice concerning electronics, sabotage, and surveillance, with data on everything from bugs to scramblers. There is a comprehensive chapter on natural, non-lethal, and lethal weapons, running the gamut from cattle prods to sub-machine guns to bows and arrows.

In 'The House of the Seven Gables,' Nathaniel Hawthorne weaves a haunting tale of family secrets, curses, and redemption set in a decaying mansion in Salem, Massachusetts. This Gothic classic explores themes of guilt, retribution, and the lasting impact of the past on the present. Hawthorne's rich and descriptive prose, as well as his ability to create a dark and mysterious atmosphere, make this novel a masterpiece of American literature. The historical context of the Salem Witch Trials adds depth and complexity to the narrative, offering a fascinating glimpse into a dark chapter of American history. Nathaniel Hawthorne, a descendant of Salem witch trial judge John Hathorne, was uniquely positioned to explore the themes of guilt and shame that permeate 'The House of the Seven Gables.' His own family history, combined with his keen understanding of human psychology, allowed him to craft a deeply introspective and thought-provoking novel. Hawthorne's reputation as a master of symbolism and allegory is evident in this work, as he uses the physical decay of the Pyncheon mansion to mirror the moral decay of its inhabitants. I highly recommend 'The House of the Seven Gables' to readers who enjoy thought-provoking historical fiction with a touch of the supernatural. Hawthorne's exploration of guilt, redemption, and the weight of the past is as relevant today as it was when the novel was first published, making it a timeless and enduring classic.
