Quong was a creature of the olden olden days, even before grandmother. He was a short fellow, or, at least, that's what they said, with long, thin legs and an even longer, thinner tail. His face was fat and wrinkly, and big bushy eyebrows kept out the sun and flies. At least that's what I think he looked like, though no-one has actually seen him that I'd believe. Which, of course, was the trouble. Some people say that there are no such things as quongs, that it's a stupid name, and that if there were any there'd be pink elephants, too. But those people don't think Father Christmas comes every year, either. Of course this is all nonsense. There must be quongs and we must find them. And, if this story's any good, we will. So let's begin the search!

Quong Tart (Mei Guangda, 1850-1903) was born in Guangdong province and migrated with his uncle to Australia in 1859. After working on the goldfields he established a tea trading business and opened a chain of tea rooms in Sydney. He became the leading merchant and trader with China in 19th century Australia, and also a local community leader and philanthropist with established connections with political and social elites. He was a well-known and respected figure despite anti-Chinese attitudes and there was widespread shock when he was attacked and robbed in his Queen Victoria Building rooms. In 1886 Quong Tart married Margaret Scarlett who compiled, edited and composed the biographical account of his life in The Life of Quong Tart originally published in 1911.

"This book provides an account of the central moral principles that regulate the permissible use of defensive force. Quong argues that we cannot understand the morality of defensive force until we ask and answer deeper questions about how the use of defensive force fits with a more general account of justice and moral rights. In developing this view the book offers original accounts of liability, proportionality, and necessity. Quong also argues, contra the dominant view in the literature, that self-defense can sometimes be justified on the basis of an agent-relative prerogative to give greater weight to one's own life and interests. The book also provides a novel conception of individual rights against harm. Unlike some, who believe that our rights against harm are fact-relative, Quong argues that our rights against being harmed by others must, in certain respects, be sensitive to the evidence that others can reasonably be expected to possess. The final chapter provides an extended defense of the means principle, a principle that prohibits harmfully using other persons' bodies or other rightful property unless those persons are duty bound to permit this use or have otherwise waived their claims against such use"--
