Each year billions of dollars’ worth of arms are procured between various nations, despite the fact that many millions of people live in desperate poverty, many will die from hunger and hunger related diseases. Weapons of increasing firepower and the missiles to deliver them accurately are becoming acquired, mainly through the Global Arms Trade. This means that we must expect wars in the world to become increasingly violent and destructive. This book focuses on what the arms trade is and its impact on the world, the wars which have resulted or were sustained by this trade. It is necessary to know which countries sell arms and which ones buy. Also it is important to have some idea of how large the trade is. The international trade in arms has considerably increased since World War 2. Major weapons (aircraft, missiles, tanks and ships) probably account for about one-half of the total trade in weapons and equipment. Many countries and their respective Military-Industrial Complex are ‘making a killing’ in the world’s largest trade in the buying and selling of military technology (weapons).

Damien Rogers examines how the international community has responded to the challenge of controlling small arms and light weapons since the early 1990s. He focuses on the maturing relationships between particular actors of world affairs and identifies how arms brokers and users of these weapons are able to mitigate, resist or elude the intended effects of those responses.

Ballistic Trauma: A Practical Guide provides a concise guide to the clinical and operational issues surrounding the management of the ballistic casualty. The book crystallizes the knowledge and experience accrued by those dealing with ballistic trauma on a regular basis and extends this to those who have to manage these patients on an occasional basis only. This book is aimed at all medical and paramedical personnel involved in the care of patients with ballistic injury. It will be especially relevant for consultants and senior trainees in surgery, anesthesia and emergency medicine who are likely to be involved in the management of these unique injuries. It will be an essential reference for pre-hospital care providers and nurses working in the emergency room and intensive care. Military surgeons and medical and nursing staff on deployment in regions of conflict will find the book a valuable resource.

There has been growing awareness in the world of the problems created by the global surplus of small arms and light weapons. One of the approaches suggested to enhance transparency about the legal manufacture and trade of such weapons is the creation of an arms register for these types of weapons. The aim of this paper is to discuss relevant practical considerations for a potential small arms and light weapons register to help ensure that it is a worthwhile and viable measure, and to propose a model which may be followed in establishing such a register. The first part highlights some of the general points to be considered when designing a light weapons register, including its scope or content, organization, and operation. Part two outlines a model for such a register, with a possible format and explanatory notes for a register based on the points noted in the first part of the paper. Sample data forms are included.
