Excerpt from The Russian Peasant and the Revolution The Russian Revolution came at the wrong hour. It should have come before or after the war, but not in the midst of it. While the war lasted, we were so passionately engrossed in it, that we were not prepared to tolerate anything that was likely to interfere with our military success. That was quite natural. The war loomed as the biggest thing in our life. We felt that everything we respected, loved and enjoyed would be annihilated, unless we smashed the threatening force. As long, therefore, as the Russian Revolution appeared to us to be a gain for our cause, - as it had in the early days, when we imagined that it was essentially a revolt against the pro-Germain oligarchy - we sang hymns of praise to it. But when it became apparent that the Revolution was much more than that, that it was a rebellion against the entire social order which the old regime had reared, and that instead of strengthening, it had actually weakened Russia's military power, we grew suspicious and wroth. Excerpt from Through the Russian Revolution In 1917 the social and economic fabric of the land was shot to pieces. Ten million peasants dragged from their ploughs were dying in the trenches. Millions more were perishing of cold and hunger in the cities While the corrupt ministers intrigued with the Germans and the court held bacchanalian revels with the notorious monk, Rasputin. Even the Cadet, Milyukov, was forced to say: History does not know Of another govern ment so stupid, so dishonest, so cowardly, so treacherous. All governments rest Upon the patience Of the poor. It seems everlasting, but there comes an end to it. It came in Russia in March, 1917. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Dawn in Russia: Or Scenes in the Russian Revolution I have not attempted in this book to do more than describe some of the scenes which I witnessed in Russia during the winter of I905 - Igo6, while I was acting there as special correspondent for the Daily Cbrouicle. For the most part, the descriptions are given in the same words which I wrote down at the time, either for my own memory or for the news paper. But the whole has been re-arranged and rewritten, while certain scenes have been added for which a daily paper has no room. I have also inserted between the scenes a bare outline of the principal events that were happening elsewhere, so that the Significance of what I saw may be more easily understood, and the dates become something better than mere numbers. Excerpt from Inside the Russian Revolution And what do you think happened to that train my daughter was to have taken? He asked. It was the regular night express to Petrograd, correspond ing somewhat to the Congressional Limited between New York and Washington. A few miles out of Moscow a difference arose between the engineer and the stoker, and in order to settle it they stopped the train and had a fight. One of the men hit the other on the head with a monkey wrench, injuring him pretty badly. Authority of some kind stepped in and arrested the assailant. The engineer's cab was blood-stained, and some authority unhitched the engine and sent it back to Moscow as evidence. The train all this time, with its hundreds of passengers, stood on the tracks waiting for a new engine and crew, and if it was not run into and wrecked it was because it was lucky. Excerpt from The Russian Revolution: The First Year To understand Russia today one must know a little of Russian history and character. The Romanoff line numbers sovereigns of real genius - Peter the Great, who brought ideas of western civilisation and an imperial future to his people Catherine, who in cynical ambition and ruthlessness rivalled Frederick the Great of Prussia; Alexander the First, 'who alone of the monarchs opposing Napoleon showed real genius, imagination, and idealism. Russian Czars have by a stroke of their autocratic pen liberated the serfs, summoned the nations to Hague Conventions, and abolished vodka drinking. The genius shown by Russian monarchs is reflected in varied forms in the Russian people, which has embraced such contemporary giants as Kropotkin, Metchnikoff, and Tolstoy.
