In The Republic of Macedonia, or Upper Macedonia, the language is known as Macedonian or македонски (makedonski). Dispite being on the crossroads of Europe and Asia, or perhaps because of it, the Macedonian people have struggled historically claiming their territory and their own language. It is beyond the scope of this book to discuss the politics, but the Macedonian language includes many loan words and cognates with neighboring languages, particularly Bulgarian. Macedonian is the official language of the Republic of North Macedonia, where it is spoken by more than 1.3 million people. . It is spoken by roughly two-thirds of the population natively, and as a second language by much of the rest of the population.
