Excerpt from The Retrospect of Medicine, Vol. 19: Being a Half-Yearly Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences; January June, 1849 They were slightly elevated. To detect the elevation the finger had to be passed very delicately over the surface, as they had none of the hardness of the papules of lichen, or of the first day's emp tion of smallpox. Their apices were never acuminated, never flat, but invariably rounded - their bases gradually passed into the level of the surrounding cuticle. No trace of a vesicle or white spot of any kind was ever detected on them. They were circular and of a bright rose colour, the latter fading insensibly into the natural hue of the skin around. They never possessed a well-defined margin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Retrospect of Practical Medicine and Surgery, Vol. 19: Being a Half-Yearly Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences; January to July, 1849 It is very rare to meet with arachnitis in acute dropsy. States of deliri um, and even mania, often supervene; but these are due to a disturbed nu tritton of the brain itself; either due to the watery and pale state of the blood, or to the irritation of the brain by retained urea. When you examine cases of this description after death, you find no evidence of recent serous inflammation, but only a pale state of the brain, which is of less than its normal bulk, and is surrounded with more subarachnoid fluid than is usual in the state of health. The delirium, in these cases, is very analogous to that which occurs in rheumatism and gout. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Retrospect of Medicine, Vol. 76: Being a Half-Yearly Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences; July-December, 1877 After the introduction into the animal economy of a poison or of a contagium a definite sequence of phenomena is noticed. Each has a definite and specific action; a certain time elapses after the reception of the substance into the system before morbid symptoms are developed; the severity of the symptoms varies with the dose of the substance introduced; the effects are modified by temperament or constitutional peculiarity on the part of the recipient; and after a time the substance is eliminated from the system. But, the existence of so many definite and distinct contagious diseases proves that the poisons which give rise to them are specifically distinct.
