Islam considers marriage as the most intimate communion between man and woman. The mystery of sex finds it fulfilment when intimate spiritual harmony is combined with the physical link. Marriage and family laws are, therefore, an important part of Islamic law for the fulfilment of its ultimate objective of building a harmonious and peaceful human society. In his inimitable style, Imam al-Ghazali, may Allah be pleased with him, discusses this subject in this small book, and shows how Islam, despite differences in rules and marriage, sets out inviolable principles so that marriage is not distorted by godless understandings now threatening to dehumanise many a society of both the East and West. The Islamic code of marriage and family is second to none in importance in helping to lead a life of goodness and purity.

This book suggests to the youth, solutions to only one of the burning problems of the day, marriage, from an Islamic perspective and viewpoint. The learned author, Mr. Ali Akbar Mazaheri, has put in a great deal of hard and sincere endeavour to illustrate Islamic solutions to this aspect of human life, particularly, the innocent youth of today, who are being misguided, confused and perverted by the immoral techno-propaganda of the imperialists, who have their own axe to grind to achieve their selfish and nasty objectives all around the globe. We hope that this useful book will be a guide for the perturbed youth and an answer to a part of their quest. This book is one of the many Islamic publications distributed by Ahlulbayt Organization throughout the world in different languages with the aim of conveying the message of Islam to the people of the world. In many societies, a woman is still regarded as a second-class citizen and deprived of various basic rights enjoyed by the male population. Deeply resenting this discrimination, they have championed a fight to obtain for themselves an equal status which unfortunately to date eludes them in the more modern Western states. Whereas the pendulum has swung to the extremes and has opened the way to licentiousness in the modern society, the West has often regarded Islamic women as being backward in a male-dominated world. On the contrary, Islam was the first religion formally to grant the women a status never known before. The Holy Quran, the sacred scripture of Islam, contains hundreds of teachings, which apply both to men and women alike. The moral, spiritual and economic equality of men and women as propagated by Islam is unquestionable. The specific verses of the Holy Quran, which address themselves to men or women, deal with either their physical differences or the role they each have to play in safeguarding the moral fibre of the society Islam envisages. This short booklet, largely based on the original Quranic teachings, deals with the rights enjoyed by Muslim women, the diversity of their functions as Islam sees it, the concepts of marriage, divorce and polygamy and how social and moral values are preserved in Islam. I am particularly grateful to Muhammad Zafrulla Khan for writing a treatise on a subject so misunderstood by the West.

The present work is based on an MA dissertation completed in 1974 under the direction of Professor Abu 'l-Qasim Gurji of the Faculty of Theology at Tehran University (most of the Persian text was published under the title Izdiwaj-i muwaqqat: (mut'a-sigha) - One major purpose of the present study is to trace the origin of this divergence between Sunni and Shi'i law by going back to the sources and arguments on both sides. A second purpose is to describe the legal situation of mut'a in Shi'ism. al-islam.orgThis book is one of the many Islamic publications distributed by Ahlulbayt Organization throughout the world in different languages with the aim of conveying the message of Islam to the people of the world.
