Originally published as If Ye Shall Ask, this small book on prayer comprises lectures Chambers gave at the Bible Training College in London where he focused on all aspects of prayer, from prayer’s simplicity to intercessory prayer for others. He believed that prayer changes the one praying as much as prayer moves the hand of God. The foreword introduces readers to a simple man of keen insight who, regardless of who he was with or what they were doing, without warning would say, Off with your hats, it is good to pray everywhere, followed by a brief prayer. Chambers was a spiritual realist who believed prayer enabled God to perform His order through those who pray, even though he didn’t consider prayer a natural function of the worldly minded. However, he knew prayer was a way of getting to know God that would develop the life of God in those who prayed. This powerful book on prayer, filled with wisdom and keen perception, is one to savor slowly and return to time and time again. Written by a devout man of God who shows us what we are missing when we don’t have the life of God in us. There aren’t enough stars to value its worth, whether five, ten, fifty or a hundred. Sex. Race. Scripture. Sovereignty. The book of Ruth entails them all. So readers shouldn't be fooled by its age, says Pastor John Piper. Though its events happened over 3,000 years ago, the story holds astounding relevance for Christians in the twenty-first century. The sovereignty of God, the sexual nature of humanity, and the gospel of God's mercy for the undeserving-these massive realities never change. And since God is still sovereign, and we are male or female, and Jesus is alive and powerful, A Sweet and Bitter Providence bears a message for readers from all walks of life. But be warned, Piper tells his audience: This ancient love affair between Boaz and Ruth could be dangerous, inspiring all of us to great risks in the cause of love.

Basil of Caesarea, also called Saint Basil the Great, (330 -379) was the bishop of Caesarea Mazaca in Cappadocia, Asia Minor (modern-day Kayseri, Turkey). St. Basil was born into the wealthy family of Basil the Elder, a famous rhetor, and Emmelia of Caesarea. His parents were known for their piety, and his maternal grandfather was a Christian martyr, executed in the years prior to Constantine I's conversion. The principal theological writings of Basil are his De Spirity Sancto (On the Holy Spirit), a lucid and edifying appeal to Scripture and early Christian tradition (to prove the divinity of the Holy Spirit), and his Refutation of the Apology of the Impious Eunomius, written in 363 or 364, three books against Eunomius of Cyzicus, the chief exponent of Anomoian Arianism. The first three books of the Refutation are his work; the fourth and fifth books that are usually included do not belong to Basil, or to Apollinaris of Laodicea, but probably to Didymus "the Blind" of Alexandria.

It is the Holy Spirit who convicts us of sin, who makes us feel how good and righteous, and just and patient God is, and how guilty we are, and how unfit for Heaven, and how near to Hell. It is the Holy Spirit who leads us to true repentance and confession... -from "Preparing His House" This joyful work of devotion and "experiential" religion is part testimony, part prayer book. The author, a preacher who was instrumental in the development of the theology of the Salvation Army, the Protestant evangelical organization, relates stories of the power of the Holy Spirit to transform lives and save souls, and offers meditations, excerpts from Scripture, on His authority. First published in 1906, this is an invaluable volume for anyone seeking to understand the history and ideology of this important Christian sect. American preacher SAMUEL LOGAN BRENGLE (1860-1936) was instrumental in the development of the theology of the Salvation Army. He is also the author of Heart Talks on Holiness (1897), The Way of Holiness (1902), Love Slaves (1923), and Resurrection Life and Power (1925).
