Excerpt from The Ravelings of 1929, Vol. 35 From the first to the thirty-fourth volumes of the Ravelings progress has been constant. It is true that in 1895 and 1896 but one book was published for two years; also that in 1918 the inroads of the great World War precluded a publi cation. But with these two exceptions a volume has been published each year since 1892. In 1899 the year of the title has been changed from that of the graduating class to that of the juniors who have published it from the beginning. In 1919 appeared the famous Victory Ravelings of 1920 in memory of Mon mouth's part in the World War. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Lucky Bag, 1902, Vol. 9 IN submitting this volume to our readers, it is with the full knowledge and understanding Of the impossibility of doing justice to the task allotted us. We realize how far beyond human ability it is to set forth upon these pages the mingled joys and sorrows that have entered into our lives during the four years since first we gathered together within the shadow of the Academy - that spot so hallowed by past glories and alive with memories of heroes long gone to their eternal rest. They 'have been years that have brought into our lives a deeper and truer sense of duty and responsibility; years that have given birth to friendships SO deep and true that neither time nor change can mar them; years that have molded anew our lives, our hopes, and our ambitions; years too full of joy and sadness, Of hopes and fears, of success and failure, for us to attempt to portray them. Yet, we have tried, as best we could, to lay before the reader a few of those events that have brought happiness and success into our lives - allowing those sorrows that have come and gone, leaving their scars upon us, to die and be forgotten. We have striven to trace their outlines in their happier light; to picture only those things that have gladdened our lives and drawn us Closer together in comradeship; SO that, in the days to come when we have drifted apart and our ways lie in distant corners of the earth, we may open these pages and find ourselves once more amid Old scenes, hear again familiar voices, and look upon faces of comrades long Since departed from us, but ever present in our hearts. And, as we feel the years slip byus, may our eyes brighten and our hearts grow light in the renewal Of those days when we faced the world'together and laughed at its hardships and stern realities. With these few words the editors present the lucky bag to the mercy of its readers - Only asking them to look gently upon its faults and failings, and to believe that it has. Been our aim and desire, throughout its pages, to deal With malice towards none, with charity for all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Purple and Gold, 1902, Vol. 20 The committee made a very careful investigation of the conditions at Middletown. Conn.. And found that Alpha Alpha was the only fraternity there which claimed to maintain a small. Select chapter. Most of the other fraternities have large chapter houses and require a large number of undergraduates to pay expenses and maintain their houses. The last Wes leyan Olla Podrz'da shows a total of 267 undergraduates, including special students. Of these, 226 are in the seven secret societies, fifteen in Chi Psi. And 211 in the other fraternities, or an average of thirty-five for each fraternity. The committee believed that this was entirely out of proportion to the available fraternity material in Wesleyan, and that it would be impossible to maintain a satisfactory Alpha there unless it was limited in number to fifteen or twenty members. If the fraternity material is not large in a class. Each frater nity can obtain a very few good men from such a class. And must make up its delegation of ten or twelve from material which really should not be taken into any of the better fraternities. Therefore, the poor material is likely to predominate and the tendency is downward instead of upward. For a larger number of poor men are more likely to drag down the smaller number of good men than the latter are to materially raise the standard of the former.
