This historic book may have numerous typos, missing text, images, or index. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. 1891. Not illustrated. Excerpt: ... MISCELLANEOUS. TO Transfer Printed Matter to Glass.--Flow the glass plate with a good quantity of photographers' negative varnish, which should be thinned down in the usual way. When this has been partially dried so that it will not run into the paper, lay the engraving or showbill face downwards upon the prepared surface, and subject it to slight and uniformly apportioned pressure for twenty-four hours. Then moisten the back of the paper, and by means of a soft rubber rub off the softened paper. If this is done with care, the ink lines will remain attached to the varnished glass surface. As the thin varnish is quite transparent, this is equivalent to transferring the engraving to the glass surface. The transfer is frequently improved in appearance by giving the plate (and transfer) a second coat of varnish. A cheap Gilding Bronze.--The following mixture has been recommended for cheaply gilding bronzes, etc.: --2 DEGREES lbs. cyanide of potash, 5 oz. of carbonate of potash, and 2 oz. cyanate of potass, the whole diluted in 5 pints of water, containing in solution one-fourth ounce chloride of gold. The mixture must be used at boiling heat, and after it has been applied, the gilt surface must be varnished over. To Separate the Leaves of Charred Books.-- Cut off the back so as to render the leaves absolutely independent from one another, then soak them, and dry them rapidly by a current of hot air. The leaves will then separate, but must, of course, be handled with extreme care. Japanners' Gold Size.--In gold printing japanners' gold size may, it is suggested, profitably take the place of the size ordinarily used. Powder finely of asphaltum, litharge, or red lead, each 1 oz.; stir them into a pint of linseed oil, and simmer the mixture over a gentle fire, or on a ...
