The author regards that understanding Chinese medicine and solving the controversial theoretical issues in Chinese medicine should be from its basic theory, the philosophy of Taiji science, by which some fundamental problems of Chinese medicine can be explained and clarified thoroughly. The author corrects the mistakes of naming and sorting the six meridians and collaterals in The Inner Canon of Huangdi and The Treatise on Febrile Diseases in the past thousands of years and puts forward new naming and sorting methods. He introduces the concept of "Qian Kun" (the heaven and earth) into the human body and identifies the pathogenesis of the Sanyang and Sanyin meridians and collaterals in The Treatise on Febrile Diseases. The author puts forward the theory of the same origin of Yin and Yang and of "an original Yang". He points out that the so-called Yin and Yang viscera are actually the ups and downs of "an original Yang". He criticizes the laying emphasis on Yin and neglecting Yang and reversing the order of Yin and Yang in traditional Chinese medicine theory and practice. He parallels the six meridians and collaterals and puts forward a new pulse hypothesis. He uses cosmology to understand the body science of Chinese medicine, which is unprecedented in the history of medicine and philosophy and, unique and insightful to read.

As the world's most comprehensive and deeply researched system of alternative and complementary medicine, Chinese medicine enjoys a large following in scientifically developed communities. Yet its concepts and principles have been shrouded in mystery and obscure language. This path-breaking book strips this ancient science of its mystique and metaphysical pretentions and interprets it to strike common ground with biomedical science. Concepts like qi and meridians are interpreted not as physical entities, but as constructs to facilitate diagnosis and therapy using heuristic models. Written for medical professionals, philosophers of medicine and discerning readers interested in holistic therapies, the book offers a unique perspective of Chinese medicine in an advanced biomedical world. It has practical chapters on cardiovascular disease, irritable bowel syndrome and cancer, and a compilation of Chinese herbs. This second edition of the acclaimed Theory of Chinese Medicine has new material on chronic diseases and the intriguing possible convergence of biomedicine and TCM.

The English edition of Liu Lihong’s milestone work is a sublime beacon for the profession of Chinese medicine in the 21st century. Classical Chinese Medicine delivers a straightforward critique of the politically motivated “integration” of traditional Chinese wisdom with Western science during the last sixty years, and represents an ardent appeal for the recognition of Chinese medicine as a science in its own right. Professor Liu’s candid presentation has made this book a bestseller in China, treasured not only by medical students and doctors, but by vast numbers of non-professionals who long for a state of health and well-being that is founded in a deeper sense of cultural identity. Oriental medicine education has made great strides in the West since the 1970s, but clear guidelines regarding the “traditional” nature of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) remain undefined. Classical Chinese Medicine not only delineates the educational and clinical problems faced by the profession in both East and West, but transmits concrete and inspiring guidance on how to effectively engage with ancient texts and designs in the postmodern age. Using the example of the Shanghanlun (Treatise on Cold Damage), one of the most important Chinese medicine classics, Liu Lihong develops a compelling roadmap for holistic medical thinking that links the human body to nature and the universe at large.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), with a history of thousands of years, is the crystallization of the ancient Chinese''s experiences in their struggle against diseases. It is also an integral part of the Chinese''s splendid culture. Under the influence and direction of classic Chinese philosophies, it has undergone long-term medical practice and infiltrated into, as well as absorbed from, other subjects in that point in time, thus gradually evolving into a unique medical theoretical system that contributed and is still contributing significantly to the healthcare of the Chinese and the prosperity of the Chinese nation. The basic theories of TCM are the theoretical foundations for guiding traditional Chinese preventive medicine and clinical medicine, and encompass aspects such as the philosophical foundation for TCM, understanding the effects of TCM on the physiology and pathology of the human body, and the principles in TCM for life cultivation, rehabilitation, diagnostics, and therapeutics. In this sense, the basic theories are regarded not only as an important part of TCM, but also as a compulsory course fundamental to the study and research of TCM.This book is compiled to allow the majority of readers to understand the theory of TCM and its methods of diagnosing and treating diseases in a relatively short period of time. It provides a brief introduction to the basic characteristics and theory of TCM, and a detailed schedule of learning commonly occurring diseases and patterns and their estimated 60 corresponding prescriptions. This is a great attempt in initiating more people to understand and apply the theory of TCM to diagnose and treat common diseases and provide corresponding formulas.

The journey through this book starts with a detailed look at the historical origins and evolution of TCM, tracing its roots from ancient times to its development over thousands of years, highlighting key figures, classic texts, and significant milestones that have shaped its practice today. Central to TCM are its fundamental principles, which are explored in detail to help readers grasp the philosophical underpinnings of this holistic approach to health. The book explains the Yin and Yang theory, emphasizing the importance of balance and harmony in maintaining health and preventing disease. It also covers the Five Elements theory, which describes the interactions between the elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, and how these interactions influence the human body and its functions. Diagnostic methods in Zhong Yi are another crucial aspect covered in the book. Readers will learn about the various techniques used by TCM practitioners to diagnose illnesses, including observation, listening and smelling, inquiry, and pulse palpation. These methods are integral to understanding a patient's overall health and determining the appropriate treatment plan. The book also provides an in-depth look at the common treatment modalities used in TCM. Acupuncture, one of the most well-known TCM practices, is explained with detailed descriptions of how it works and its benefits. Herbal medicine, another cornerstone of TCM, is explored extensively, including the types of herbs used, their properties, and how they are combined into formulas. Other treatments such as cupping therapy, moxibustion, and Tui Na (Chinese massage) are also discussed, providing readers with a broad understanding of the various approaches used to restore and maintain health. Dietary therapy and nutrition play a significant role in TCM, and this book delves into how diet can be used as a preventive and therapeutic measure. Applied Channel Theory in Chinese Medicine demonstrates how a deeper understanding of the interrelationship between organ and channel theory can lead to more precise diagnoses and better clinical results. This book is a collaboration between Wang Ju-Yi, one of modern China's most respected scholars, teachers, and practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine, and his American apprentice and practitioner, Jason Robertson. While most textbooks focus either on the functions of the organs in basic physiology or on the uses of the channels in treatment, this book shows the essential relationships between the two. Theory and practice are connected through a detailed discussion of a channel palpation methodology developed by Dr. Wang, which leads to more precise and effective point selection, location, and technique. Applied Channel Theory in Chinese Medicine was developed during Mr. Robertson's apprenticeship with Dr. Wang in Beijing, and is presented in a unique and highly readable format that preserves the intimacy of dialogue between apprentice and teacher, with questions and answers, narratives, and case studies.
