The study of the solid part of the earth on which structures are built is an essential part of the training of a civil engineer. Geotechnical processes such as drilling, pumping and injection techniques enhance the viability of many construction processes by improving ground conditions.Highlighting the ground investigation necessary for the process

This publication contains the papers presented at the 15th European Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ECSMGE), held in Athens, Greece. Considerable progress has been made in recent decades in understanding the engineering behavior of those hard soils and weak rocks that clearly fall into either the field of soil or of rock mechanics, and there have been important developments in design and construction methods to cope with them. Progress would be even more desirable, however, for those materials which fall into the ‘grey’ area between soils and rocks. They present particular challenges due to their diversity, the difficulties and problems arising in their identification and classification, their sampling and testing and in the establishment of suitable models to adequately describe their behavior. The publication aims to provide an updated overview of the existing worldwide knowledge of the geological features, engineering properties and behavior of such hard soils and weak rocks, with particular reference to the design and construction methods and problems associated with these materials. Part 4 was published post-conference and includes Conference Reports.

Earth reinforcing techniques are increasingly becoming a useful, powerful and economical solution to various problems encountered in geotechnical engineering practice. Expansion of the experiences and knowledge in this area has succeeded in developing new techniques and their applications to geotechnical engineering problems. In order to discuss the latest experiences and knowledge, and with the purpose of spreading them all over the world for further development, the IS Kyushi conference series on the subject of earth reinforcement have been held in Fukuoka, Japan, every four years since 1988. This fourth symposium, entitled "Landmarks in Earth Reinforcement", is a continuation of the series IS Kyushu conferences, and also aims at being one of the landmarks in the progress of modern earth reinforcement practice. The first volume contains 137 papers selected for the symposium covering almost every aspect of earth reinforcement. The second volume contains texts of the special and keynote lectures.

Over the last 50 years there has been rapid development of construction techniques, analytical methods and materials for use in ground engineering. One of the major techniques which has been developed is soil strengthening or reinforcement whereby man-made elements are included within geological material to provide a stabilised mass. Various products have been developed for retaining systems, slope stabilisation, etc.More recently, environmental concerns and the focus on sustainable development have led to the examination of materials based on renewable resources for use in ground engineering. In this book, the applications of both vegetable and man-made fibres in situations where there is a requirement for short-term ground reinforcement are examined and discussed. The use of vegetable fibre geotextiles (VFG), particularly in erosion control and soil reinforcement, is covered in detail, with examples from various civil engineering applications.Over the last 50 years there has been rapid development of construction techniques, analytical methods and materials for use in ground engineering. The 16th ICSMGE responds to the needs of the engineering and construction community, promoting dialog and exchange between academia and practice in various aspects of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. This is reflected in the central theme of the conference 'Geotechnology in Harmony with the Global Environment'. The proceedings of the conference are of great interest for geo-engineers and researchers in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. Volume 1 contains 5 plenary session lectures, the Terzaghi Oration, Heritage Lecture, and 3 papers presented in the major project session. Volumes 2, 3, and 4 contain papers with the following topics: Soil mechanics in general; Infrastructure and mobility; Environmental issues of geotechnical engineering; Enhancing natural disaster reduction systems; Professional practice and education. Volume 5 contains the report of practitioner/academic forum, 20 general reports, a summary of the sessions and workshops held during the conference.

Cliff recession and coastal landsliding of soft rock cliffs present significant threats to land use and development. Investigation and management of soft rock cliffs presents state-of-the-art guidance on how eroding cliffs can best be managed, stressing the need to consider both structural and non-structural solutions to cliff recession problems. This authoritative text outlines the investigation approaches, measurement and monitoring techniques, and prediction methods available for obtaining the necessary cliff recession information to support different stages of the decision-making process. Throughout the book, it stresses that every cliff is unique because of the controlling influence of the site geology and geomorphology on the recession process. There is, therefore, no single method to tackling cliff problems; investigation and management of each cliff can only be determined on the ground, drawing upon expert judgement, experience and thorough site investigation and data analysis. Investigation and management of soft rock cliffs will provide coastal engineers, geotechnical engineers, geomorphologists, planners and students with an invaluable resource when faced with a range of issues on cliffed coastlines.
