There are many books about war. There are books that describe the bravery and glories of war. Other books portray the warrior as an "anti-hero". The Pipes Were Calling: A Vietnam War Story is not either of these formula tales. The Pipes Were Calling tells the story of a boy, 18 year old and fresh from high school who is drafted and then sent to fight in Vietnam. He has no combat experience or Hollywood scriptwriters. To survive, he must quickly learn the rules of war. Danny Murphy learns these rules, experiences combat, endures the deaths of friends, and engages in the black humor of crises. We share his experiences as he goes from "newbie" to veteran, then finally to civilian. Danny's story is told with honesty and humor, hopefully leaving us with a clearer understanding of war.

Dick Yatzeck's tales of hunting and fishing through his youth and adulthood will resonate with many readers who also leave behind a job and house in town for boots and camouflage and the wild cries of geese.

All Things Flow is the third and final book of The Sandpoint Trilogy set in northern Idaho; it is the continuing story of the principal characters from Apology to Grouse Creek and Ten Percent Marriage plus a sprinkling of new ones. Two middle aged new-comers have arrived to live beside Grouse Creek for different reasons: Rhododendronto enjoy a late-life relationship with Mother Nature; and Elliotto build a house in the wilderness and then write a book about it for profit. Rhododendron soon discovers that she is confronted by a long suppressed grievance against her husbanda grievance for which she ultimately sees no remedy except to move on with her life. Nathaniel is again drawn into the adversity that afflicts the world beyond his mountain home when a US Marshal appears at his log house with instructions for him and Esmeralda to pack-up and leave. The result of the marshals visit is the jailing of Esmeralda and Chico, and the gun-shot wounding of Nathaniel as he escapes into the woods. Nathaniels cousin Barry becomes despondent over the untimely death of his wife, a death that has left him with a precocious seven-year-old daughter to parent. One afternoon in a smoke filled blackcap patch, Barry and Rhododendron discover that each has a desperate hunger for the other and that neither is inclined to deny his appetites. Victoria receives a telephone message from a man who introduces himself as Dennis and tells her that he believes that the two of them could combine their efforts toward a mutual goal; that he has in mind two things: expanding the territory served by The Gallery from the upper five counties of the Idaho Panhandle to the whole wide world; and expanding The Gallerys product line to include all artistic endeavor. Dennis also mentions that Victoria is to consider the inordinate amount of money required for this venture to be no objectshe is to leave the money to him. Thus begins to flow a rapid stream of events: Nathaniel goes to Emily at Arrowhead Point to recuperate from his gun-shot wound and to plan his return to The Old Growth to defend his home. Emily takes advantage of Nathaniels convalescence to paint his portrait. Barry resigns from the US Forest Service as the result of political chicanery and moves to Washington, DC, to work as the understudy for the senior senator from Idaho. Rhododendron divorces Elliot and moves to Spokane, Washington, to work for The Sierra Club and to be near Barry. Victoria accepts Barrys seven-year-old daughter as her change. Dennis and his life-long lover, Doris, inform Victoria that they want her to become the modern day Lorenzo de Medici for the entire planet. Victoria is stunned by the radical changes looming before her should she accept Doris and Denniss financial donation; but she cannot imagine not accepting the opportunity that is hers for the taking. By the end of the tale, readers have become aware of what Lucretius, the Roman poet and philosopher, had written centuries before: that no single thing abidesbut all things flow.

From the editor of the outstandingly popular Italy in Mind comes another superb collection: three centuries of fiction, poems, and essays, from both Irish expatriates and non-Irish visitors. From the comic terror of Frank McCourt's First Communion to the raucous pagan festival Muriel Rukeyser attended in County Kerry in the 1930s; from John Betjeman's lyrical evocation of a ruined abbey in the mist to Eric Newby's hilariously disastrous bicycle trip through Ireland; from William Trevor's gentle Irish clergyman encountering the long angry reach of his country's past tragedies to Brian Moore's wistful return from a life spent in exile, this anthology offers a kaleidoscope of this mysterious, elusive country. This is a fourth instalment of funny, strange and utterly true tales from "Harry the Polis". The fourth "Harry the Polis" book, "Yer Never Gonny Believe It", continues to expose the lighter side of our industrious police force. Harry Morris's time with the Glasgow and Strathclyde constabulary, or 'polis' for short, hasn't robbed him of his sense of humour, and every wily witness, cocky con, and sarcastic sergeant he ever rubbed up against is here in page after page of humorous stories. Full of hilarious anecdotes, oddball characters, quick comebacks and unlikely excuses, "Yer Never Gonny Believe It" shows true Scottish humour at its finest. There's plenty more material from Harry's twenty-nine year career in the rank and file. As in his previous three books, Harry serves up one hilarious story after another from his vast catalogue of polis escapades. Already described by Alex Dickson of Radio Clyde as "classics of our time" and by Bob Shields of the "Daily Record" as "a must read for anyone who likes to walk about with a grin on their face", "Yer Never Gonny Believe It" is sure to arrest you with its irrepressible mirth.

Founded in 1820 by Boaz Fleming, Fairmont, West Virginia, is located midway between Morgantown and Clarksburg. It is the seat of Marion County, which was formed in 1842 from Harrison and Monongalia Counties. During its heyday in the early 20th century, Fairmont was home to 100 millionaires who prospered in the town largely because of the coal fields, which were connected to the Eastern Seaboard markets by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Today Fairmont is undergoing a renaissance and looks forward to continued growth while retaining its unique history.
