Since the 1960s, the world's population has more than doubled and agricultural production per person has increased by a third. Yet this growth in production has masked enormous hidden costs arising from widespread pesticide use - massive ecological damage and high incidences of farmer poisoning and chronic health effects. Whereas once the risks involved with pesticide use were judged to be outweighed by the potential benefits, increasingly the external costs of pesticides, to environments and human health, are being seen as unacceptable. In response to this trend, recent years have seen millions of farmers in communities around the world reduce their use of harmful pesticides and develop cheaper and safer alternatives. The Pesticide Detox explores the potential for the phasing-out of hazardous pesticides and the phasing-in of cost effective alternatives already available on the market. This book makes clear that it is time to start the pesticide detox and to move towards a more sustainable agriculture.

This sequel to the Handbook for Pesticide Disposal by Common Chemical Methods has examined chemical detoxification/degradation methods for 40 pesticides. The objectives for this study are the same as described in the companion: to develop practical chemical methods by which the layman can detoxify pesticides and to delineate hazards associated with the detoxification methods. The 40 pesticides were selected on the basis of their toxicological properties, their consumption, and their representation of other pesticides. Chemistry was reviewed for each through literature search and personal contacts with pesticide manufacturers and other sources. Although many of the selected pesticides are susceptible to alkaline hydrolysis, this approach is only recommended for 11 of the pesticides: monocrotophos; phosphamidon; fensulfothion; PennCap-M (microencapsulated methyl parathion); disulfoton; phorate; methamidophos; carbofuran; aldicarb; methomyl; and captafol. Details for treating each of the 11 pesticides are presented. No acceptable chemical detoxificatioin was found for the remaining pesticides: ronnel; dimethoate; Dyfonate; Def; EPTC; molinate; thiram; propanil; Diphenamid; chlorozuron; simazine; cyanazine; Amitrole; paraquat; PCNB; dinoseb; chloropicrin; chlorobenzilate; endrin; D-D; dibromochloropropane (DBCP); BHC; dicamba; sodium fluoroacetate (Compound 1080); creosote; and warfarin.

This latest volume in Wiley Blackwell’s prestigious Annual Plant Reviews brings together articles that describe the biochemical, genetic, and ecological aspects of plant interactions with insect herbivores.. The biochemistry section of this outstanding volume includes reviews highlighting significant findings in the area of plant signalling cascades, recognition of herbivore-associated molecular patterns, sequestration of plant defensive metabolites and perception of plant semiochemicals by insects. Chapters in the genetics section are focused on genetic mapping of herbivore resistance traits and the analysis of transcriptional responses in both plants and insects. The ecology section includes chapters that describe plant-insect interactions at a higher level, including multitrophic interactions, investigations of the cost-benefit paradigm and the altitudinal niche-breadth hypothesis, and a re-evaluation of co-evolution in the light of recent molecular research. Written by many of the world’s leading researchers in these subjects, and edited by Claudia Voelckel and Georg Jander, this volume is designed for students and researchers with some background in plant molecular biology or ecology, who would like to learn more about recent advances or obtain a more in-depth understanding of this field. This volume will also be of great use and interest to a wide range of plant scientists and entomologists and is an essential purchase for universities and research establishments where biological sciences are studied and taught. The pesticide should cause effect on the target pests and be selective enough to spare the non-target beneficial. The book deals with the pesticide toxicity to predators, parasitoids and microbes which are used for pest management in the agroecosystem. The other beneficials exposed to pesticides are pollinators, earthworms, silkworm and fishes. The book contains information on the modes of pesticide exposure and toxicity to the organisms, sub-lethal effects of insecticides and method of toxicity assessment, risk assessment of pesticidal application in the field. The purpose of the work is to compile and present the different procedures to assess pesticide poising in organisms related to the agroecosystem along with discussions on risk assessment procedures with clear comparison of toxicity of pesticides to target pests and non target beneficial organisms.

With our environment, homes and food becoming increasingly toxic, it is more important to practice natural cleansing methods now than any time in history. The information contained in this book is essential to reestablishing and maintaining good health. Cleansing is one of the oldest and most revered natural healing practices. It is also one of the most misunderstood. This is the first book to take a comprehensive approach to cleansing and detoxification programs. The Four Winds Holistic Cleanse described in this book is the first complete program to address detoxifying the entire body in a safe, gentle and effective manner. This book provides the reader with everything they need to know about cleansing including the history, the bodys detox pathways, understanding toxins and their role in disease, herbal medicine and supplements, home spa techniques and a specific two week program. The program is based on a combination of clinical experience working with patients, the latest scientific findings and best of ancient traditions. The most unique aspect of this book is its emphasis on showing the reader how to embracing cleansing as a truly transformative physical healing process and a catalyst to personal growth. The Four Winds Holistic Cleanse is a powerful catalyst anyone can use to stimulate the bodies innate ability to heal itself. By purchasing this book, you are taking a powerful journey to return to optimal health. "All true healing begins with detoxification. This book will show how to cleanse and detoxify your bodys systems safely and effectively." Michael Tierra, author of the East West Herb Course, Way of Herbs and Planetary Herbology and founder of the American Herbalists Guild (AHG). Unlike many books on cleansing, Nicholas shares a comprehensive, historical and practical synopsis of cleansing therapies. The program is safe, simple and practical. Most importantly it is backed by his years of practicing as a clinical herbalist. I highly recommend it to anyone who has interest in cleansing or natural healing. Miles Coleman, Herbalist, RH (AHG) I recommend this book to my patients as a useful adjunct to natural healing and Traditional Chinese Medicine treatments. I have seen many patients benefit tremendously from the Four Winds Holistic Cleanse program described in this book. I feel it is excellent for helping to heal many of the chronic diseases facing so many Americans today. Joel Dunning, Acupuncturist, M.Ac., L.Ac., Dipl.Herb.
