Fr. Alexander Schmemann continues to influence liturgical and sacramental theologies some thirty-five years after his death. Despite the wide acceptance within Protestant circles of his timeless classic, For the Life of the World, there has been relatively little written about him from an ecumenical context. This volume of collected essays seeks to explore his theological legacy and further his work. With essays from leading scholars such as David Fagerberg, Bruce Morrill, Joyce Zimmerman, and more, this volume is meant for both teachers and students of liturgical and sacramental theology. In an effort to introduce Schmemann to a wider audience and to celebrate his work through meaningful engagement and dialogue, contributors come from a wide variety of ecclesiastical backgrounds: Anglican, Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist, Free Church, and more. "The Eucharist is therefore the manifestation of the Church as the new aeon; it is participation in the Kingdom as the parousia, as the presence of the Resurrected and Resurrecting Lord. It is not the 'repetition' of His advent or coming into the world, but the lifting up of the Church into His parousia, the Church's participation in His heavenly glory." Fr. Alexander Schmemann, Introduction to Liturgical Theology, p. 72.

This book contains a lengthy introduction, translation and commentary on John Selden's Uxor Hebraica. Selden was a seventeenth century Christian talmudist, classicist, legal historian and member of the British parliament who wrote extensively on a wide variety of subjects including seven books, all in Latin, of various aspects of Jewish Law. Uxor Hebraica is an exhaustive treatment of Jewish marriage law. Among the subjects treated are incest (including a unique discussion of the Karaite rules), levirate, the marriage contract and ceremonies and divorce. Selden extensively used the Hebrew Bible, its ancient and later translations, the Talmud, and especially Maimonides' Mishneh Torah. He widened his discussion by including comparative material from the New Testament, church fathers, Greece and Rome, Islam, plus usages from Ethiopia, Russia, Byzantium and medieval Europe. Although written without polemic, the work is clearly related to the religious controversies of the day.

A complete resource for the theology, liturgy, and practice of the pastoral offices. This easy-to-use resource for clergy and lay liturgical leaders examines baptism, confirmation, marriage, reconciliation of the penitent, ministration to the sick, and burial, offering background and guidance for each liturgy. Each chapter begins with brief historical and theological contexts, followed by a discussion of pastoral and liturgical issues relevant to each rite. Because cultural considerations are often central to the pastoral offices, each chapter includes an overview of cultural practices surrounding each liturgy that may be unfamiliar to clergy. Taking into account theological and liturgical perspectives from a variety of denominations, Shepherding Souls is designed to be useful in any church. This trusted resource provides the busy church leader with everything needed to prepare for and administer pastoral offices.

Conservative Christian views on marriage and divorce are often presented as bulwarks against the tragedy of marital breakdown. Yet the advice given to divorced Christians and those facing the disintegration of their relationships is often irresponsible and damaging. Women fleeing domestic violence are told they are bound to their abusers by indissoluble spiritual bonds. Some are sent back to face further violence. Children are exposed to further abuse. People are condemned to lives of unnecessary loneliness and second marriages are undermined. A pall is cast over many lives. Why? Why should vulnerable people be given advice that is so damaging? Those who protest are told that this is what the Bible teaches. But does it? This book critically examines the relevant texts, revealing fundamental errors due to theological misconceptions and difficulties of understanding nuances of the original languages and the contexts in which crucial words were spoken. Properly understood, the relevant biblical passages do not lock people into intolerable situations. Christians are called to be faithful in their marital relationships, but not to pretend that former marriages still exist or refuse to recognize subsequent ones. And we are called to embrace, not condemn, the brokenhearted.

The T&T Clark Handbook of Suffering and the Problem of Evil provides an extensive exploration of the theology of theodicy, asking questions such as should all instances of suffering necessarily be understood as evil? Why would an omnipotent and benevolent God allow or perpetrate evil? Is God unable or unwilling to reduce human and non-human suffering on Earth? Does humanity have the capacity to exercise a moral evaluation of God's motives and intentions? Conventional disciplinary boundaries have tended to separate theological approaches to these questions from philosophical ones. This volume aims to overcome these boundaries by including biblical (Part I), historical (Part II), doctrinal (Part III), philosophical (Part IV), and pastoral, interreligious perspectives and alternative intersections (Part V) on theodicy. Authors include thinkers from analytic and continental traditions, multiple Christian denominations and other religions, and both established and younger scholars, providing a full variety of approaches. What unites the essays is an attempt to answer these questions from the perspective of biblical testimony, historical scholarship, modern theological and philosophical thinking about the concept of God, non-Christian religions, science and the arts. The result is a combination of in-depth analysis and breadth of scope, making this a benchmark work for further studies in the theology of suffering and evil.
