Six dark fictions with a cosmic scope and a delirious immediacy, these shorter pieces (2 novellas and 4 one-acts) are an aspect of Swartz's gift many will find welcome, others hugely unsettling. The Old Man and the Bird, the concluding sequence of a befuddled Harry Ricci, could be taken as a "neo-conservatively-grotesque" parable. From there it is a short stroll to Burt Spew in "Snappers," a madcap Armageddon of its own and parody of "Jaws." We have as well such oddities as "The Damnation of Winston Pollock," the saga of a disgruntled software wizard; "The Gift Horse and the Gift," the comic swan song of a disaffected shooter; "Off the Record," the threnody of "a pedophilic trans-racial hip hop" composer; and "Clippers," the outcry of a small-town American sub-literate, a latter-day, testosterone-laden barber "waiting for [his] Godot." All told, these tales are abundant reminder that it was possible to laugh before 9/11, and to chuckle, even roar, long after, en route to our current Abu Ghraibs or Guantanamos.

These are the Faroe Islands as they were some fifty years ago: sea-washed and remote, with one generation still tied to the sea for sustenance, and a younger generation turning towards commerce and clerical work in the towns. At the post-hunt whale-meat auction, the normally cautious Ketil enthusiastically bids for more meat than he can afford. Thus in his seventieth year, Ketil and his wife, along with their youngest son, struggle to repay their debt. They scavenge for driftwood and stranded seals, and knit up a storm of jumpers to sell in town. A touching novel that deftly captures a vanishing way of life. 'The Faroese voted this their book of the 20th century; by any nation's standards it's a classic.' Financial Times

Clive Staples Lewis, better known as C.S. Lewis, was a respected academic, writer, and speaker. While he might be best known for his works of fantasy, especially the Chronicles of Narnia and Space Trilogy series, he also wrote many books on Christian apologetics, including Mere Christianity, Miracles, and The Problem of Pain. While Lewis was a lecturer at Oxford, he became close friends with fellow lecturer J.R.R. Tolkien, future author of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Both authors participated in an informal writing group, The Inklings, where they critiqued and debated each other’s texts and ideas. His works have been translated into more than 30 languages and have sold millions of copies. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe stands out as his most popular fantasy work. Initially, the first book in the Chronicles of Narnia, though chronologically the second by order, it tells of the adventures of children who magically arrive in a magical country called Narnia. In Narnia, magic comes as no surprise, animals both speak and act, and good strives against evil. Lewis weaves Christian themes throughout the Chronicles of Narnia in a manner that is both accessible and picturesque for readers young and old. Attentive readers will also spot elements of Roman and Greek mythology as well as British and Irish folklore. Contents: Fantasy Classics - The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - Prince Caspian - The Voyage of the Dawn Treader - The Silver Chair - The Horse and His Boy - The Magician's Nephew - The Last Battle Science Fiction Novels - Out of the Silent Planet Religious Studies - Mere Christianity - The Screwtape Letters - Screwtape Proposes a Toast

David H. Keller, M.D. (1880-1966) was indeed a medical doctor (a psychiatrist -- and the first to write science fiction). He was an early proponent of H.P. Lovecraft and wrote a number of articles on Lovecraft's work, whose influence can be seen in some of his horror stories. Another influence was James Branch Cabell. This volume concentrates on Keller's fantasy and horror, but does include -- at the end of the book -- a few science-fiction and science-fantasy works which we obtained to late to include in the (already published) Golden Age of Science Fiction volume of his work. Included here are: THE JELLY-FISH THE WORM THE BONELESS HORROR A PIECE OF LINOLEUM THE GOLDEN BOUGH THE DEAD WOMAN THE DOORBELL TIGER CAT THE THIRTY AND ONE HEREDITY THE FACE IN THE MIRROR THE GOLDEN KEY STENOGRAPHER'S HANDS WHITE COLLARS THE CEREBRAL LIBRARY UNTO US A CHILD IS BORN LIFE EVERLASTING A note to the sensitive: As with many pulp writers, especially those born in the 19th Century, his works are not always politically correct by today's standards. You have been warned. If you enjoy this book, search your favorite ebook store for "Wildside Press Megapack" to see the 200+ other entries in the series, covering science fiction, fantasy, mysteries, westerns, classics, adventure stories, and much, much more!

Entrenched secrets, mysterious spirits, and an astonishing friendship weave together in this extraordinary and haunting debut that School Library Journal calls “a powerful story about loss and moving on.” Nothing matters. Only Bird matters. And he flew away. Jewel never knew her brother Bird, but all her life she has lived in his shadow. Her parents blame Grandpa for the tragedy of their family’s past: they say that Grandpa attracted a malevolent spirit—a duppy—into their home. Grandpa hasn’t spoken a word since. Now Jewel is twelve, and she lives in a house full of secrets and impenetrable silence. Jewel is sure that no one will ever love her like they loved Bird, until the night that she meets a mysterious boy in a tree. Grandpa is convinced that the boy is a duppy, but Jewel knows that he is something more. And that maybe—just maybe—the time has come to break through the stagnant silence of the past.
