Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from The Numismatic Chronicle and Journal of the Royal Numismatic Society, 1858, Vol. 19 Sir, I have much pleasure in laying before the Numismatic Society this evening, copies, in gutta percha, of two very curious coins lately acquired by the British Museum; the first of which bears the name on it of the celebrated city of Nineveh. Though extremely rare, it is not actually unique - a similar coin having been described by M. Sestini. The obverse bears the bust of the Emperor Trajan with the legend Imp. Traian. Cae. Avg. Ger. The reverse, an eagle with expanded wings between military standards, and the legend Col. Avg. Feli. Nini. Clav. There is no reason to doubt that the coin must have been struck to commemorate the foundation of a Roman colony at this place by the Emperor Claudius, who founded many similar colonies in many parts of the East. Excerpt from The Numismatic Chronicle and Journal of the Royal Numismatic Society, 1917, Vol. 17 The Sale Cataloguer remarks on the unusual style of the portrait. It is, however, very like the head selected by imhoof-blumer13 for enlargement as a specially fine portrait of Demetrius. The type, it may be observed, shows an approximation to the head of Seleucus I, I4 and is indeed nearer to that than to the ordinary head of Demetrius, which is shown, for instance, on the coin illustrated on pi. I. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Excerpt from The Numismatic Chronicle and Journal of the Royal Numismatic Society, Vol. 11 One of the most interesting problems in the study Of Jewish coins arises from the fact that obedience to the Second Commandment prevented the nation from strik ing money with the effigy of the ruler, or indeed with the likeness of any living creature at all. On the one hand, this robs them of the interest which attaches to most series of ancient coins. It is difficult to learn much of religion, manners, or customs from the coins, except from what does not appear. On the other hand, it exercises the ingenuity to the highest degree in order to discover what is the meaning Of the types which are extant.
