Excerpt from The Numismatic Chronicle, and Journal of the Numismatic Society, 1896, Vol. 16 A day perhaps comes to every man in his life when he may honestly feel inclined, to use a vulgar expression, to shake hands with himself, and at this moment I possess that feeling. That the Council of your learned Society, of which I have been a member since 1858 (thirty-eight years), should have chosen me as the recipient of what may be described as the blue ribbon of Numismatic Science and Literature, is a distinguished honour and a matter of the greatest satisfaction to me, and is certainly a high reward for the time and labour spent in the pursuit of a subject dear to all of us present here to - night. I must necessarily, after hearing the attering words which you, Sir J ohn, have been good enough to say to me, confess that you make me cognisant of my own unworthiness and short comings; but I can plead, that though I may be not certain of my worthiness for this honour, I can conscientiously say that I have devoted the greater portion of my life to the study of Numismatics in the love of the subject and with zeal. Excerpt from The Numismatic Chronicle, and Journal of the Numismatic Society, 1898, Vol. 18 From the above list it will be seen that this is of the most important finds of silver coins, so far as it relates to the reign of Edward III, that has taken place in recent times in England. The series of groats and half-groats of that reign are very extensive, especially those which belong to the first issue; and varieties of legend and type enable us to divide them up into several classes, showing some chronological sequence. The pre servation of these coins is, on the whole, very satisfactory, some pieces even being in a fine state. The pennies of Edward I, II, and III, are equally numerous; but nu fortunately the worn condition of many of them rendered their classification in some instances a matter of some difficulty.
