Excerpt from The Normal Herald, Vol. 17: April, 1912 The teacher at Indiana enjoys a freedom from interference and unnecessary red-tape which few teachers in America enjoy. America, the land of freedom, is not a land of freedom for the teacher. Experience has taught, however, that only by giving teachers free dom, their selection having been carefully done, and calling for results, can the best be secured. Germany has learned this lesson better than any other nation and Germany is the world's school master. The foregoing is trite, but it needs emphasis because neither the public nor our corps of teachers realize its full truth. Some of our teachers have had little experience outside the walls of this school and do not know what petty regulations are so often imposed on teachers by principals anxious to make a reputation for having a school which runs like a machine. As has been repeatedly shown, a school is not a machine, and the principal who tries to make a machine of it, wrecks it. Some teachers wrest this freedom to their own destruction, but the end result of the system of free dom is good.
