The petrochemical sector is in the aftermath of extensive restructuring. This change has altered the current situation of the industry and its outlook. It has also forced the producers, users, and financing institutions to design new strategies, adapt to these changes and prepare for the future. The purpose of this document is to shed light on the current and expected developments in the world market for petrochemicals. It also attempts to identify the geographic areas and fields of activity where new investments are more likely, useful and most efficiently utilized. The document is divided into four parts dealing with: (a) the identified global trends in the petrochemical sector; (b) a description of the current world situation; (c) a regional supply/demand analysis of the current situation and forecast to the year 1995; and (d) a brief analysis regarding potential actions and investments in developing countries.

In this theoretically original work, two distinguished authors explore the mutual interdependence of states and firms throughout the world. They show how global structural changes - in finance, technology, knowledge and politics - often impel governments to seek the help and cooperation of managers of multinational enterprises. Yet, as Professors Stopford and Strange demonstrate, this is constrained by each country's economic resources, its social structures and its political history. Based on grass-roots research into the experience of over 50 multinationals and more than 100 investment projects in three developing countries- Brazil, Malaysia and Kenya - the authors develop a matrix of agendas. They present the impact on projects of the multiple factors affecting the bargaining relationships between the government and the foreign firm at different times and in a variety of economic sectors. In conclusion they offer some guidelines for actions to both governments and firms and some points to future interdisciplinary research.

Microenterprises play an important role in sub Saharan Africa. They account for a sizeable portion of the economy, by providing employment and a means of livelihood for much of the nonagricultural population. This paper is the result of a survey of the literature and extensive discussions with practicioners and its primary focus is a direct approach in support of microenterprises. Perhaps the simplest objective to pursue is access to credit. The main lesson from experimentation in this field is that the poor are bankable and and can be served relatively inexpensively, provided nontraditional lending methods are utilized (e.g. group lending). Technical assistance and support services can also be provided to help first-time entrepreneurs set up their own businesses, to assist microenterprises in their daily business, or to help them graduate to a larger size. The task of assisting microenterprises requires small, flexible, and responsive organizations, with sufficient autonomy to make ad hoc decisions, yet with adequate coordination at the national level. Such organizations include PVOs, NGOs, cooperatives, banks, business associations, churches and women's groups. The report recommends that capacity building be incorporated as a specific objective of microenterprise support programs and should be budgeted for. Shifting the focus of assistance from beneficiaries to support institutions is an effective way of reaching the most marginal groups.

The process of globalization can be seen in the increase of: trade interdependence, the importance of global multinational corporations, mobility and volatility of capital flows (with dangers demonstrated by the recent Mexican crisis). This globalization creates both dangers and new opportunities, both winners and losers. The parallel growth of regional blocs is equally hazardous, particularly for countries left outside the regional blocs. The book, with contributions by eminent experts, describes the impact of both globalization and regionalization and the relationship between these two dominant trends.

Discussing the technological supremacy of the chemical industry, including pharmaceuticals, and how it will adopt a leading position to solve some of the largest global challenges humans have even seen, this book details how the industry will address climate change, aging populations, resource scarcity, globality, networks speed, pandemics, and massive growth and demand. Following a detailed introduction to some of the megatrends shaping our world over the forthcoming decades, the book goes on to provide several scenarios of how the world could look by 2050, including 'business as usual' and a 'sustainable' one. Chapter 3 gives a comprehensive overview of the current status, while providing a short historical review of the chemical industry, its origins, achievements and fundamentals. The following chapter reviews the potential impact of each of the selected megatrends on the industry, while Chapter 5 proposes how it could look by 2050. Several features of the chemical industry are presented and discussed, including the industrial relevance from an economical, technological and profitability point of view. The largest chemicals markets in absolute and per capita bases and the areas and countries with largest growth potential for chemicals, pharmaceuticals and feedstock. This chapter also reviews the impact of climate change on the chemical industry from a feedstocks and products point of view and, more specifically, the potential costs in reducing CO2 emissions. A final, concluding chapter summarizes the forthcoming megatrends and potential challenges, opportunities and the outlook for the industry as a whole.

The papers in this volume cover three major areas of International Business: Developments in Theory, The Foreign Market Servicing Strategies of Multinational Firms and Asia-Pacific Issues. The theory section examines the internationalisation process, the role of management in international business theory, approaches to Japanese foreign direct investment and the contrast between the approach taken to international business by internalisation theorists and that of international strategic management. The choices between exporting, foreign licensing of technology and direct investment abroad are examined in Part II. The foreign market servicing decisions are examined both at the level of the firm and in aggregate at the level of an economy (the UK). The impact of these decisions on competitiveness is evaluated and the role of international joint ventures is examined for the case of the UK. The final section examines current issues in the Asia-Pacific economies. The impact of the Single European Market on Pacific Futures and Government-Business relations (Japan versus UK) are the focus of attention and the taxation implications of joint ventures in China are examined in detail.
