Excerpt from The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans, Vol. 2 of 4: With Biographical Sketches Dr. Franklin was unquestionably a very remarkable man one who, in any age or country, would, by the mere force Of his native talents, have made a respectable figure in life. It is probable, however, that had his lot thrown him in an older or more refined community than America was in his youth, he would not have been contemplated as the sun of the system. He, like many other distinguished characters, was much indebted to circumstances. It must be admitted, too, that he had many conceits, or fancies; that he was by no means without his foibles; and that, in his own phrase, he committed some great errors in the early part Of his career. Excerpt from The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans, Vol. 2 Although guilty of some excesses while' in London, he afterwards became a model Of temperance and industry, and even reformed his brother printers by his example and exhortation. While in London, he continued to devote his leisure hours to books and study, and in 1726, after a stay of eighteen months, he returned to America, with Mr. Denham, a merchant Of Philadelphia, as his clerk, on a salary of 50 a year. On his arrival, he found that his old sweetheart, Miss Read, had been induced by her parents, in con sequence Of his neglect, which franklin justly regarded as one of the great errors of his life, to marry another man. Extraordinary circumstances, however, prevented that couple from ever living together; and, at a subsequent period, franklin married the lady, who proved an excellent and invaluable wife. His truly worthy master, Mr. Denham, died in the course of the ensuing year, when franklin returned to his original business, first under Keimer his former master, then with a young man of the name Of Meredith; they printed a newspaper, which was conducted with much ability, and acquired franklin some reputation; the project Was very profitable, and afforded him an Opportunity of distinguishing himself as a political writer. He also Opened a shop for the sale of books and stationery. In 1732, having had leisure for both reading and writing, he began to publish Poor Richard's Almanac, which he continued with great success for many years. 64 The Way to Wealth, extracted from that publication, and consisting Of numerous and valuable concise maxims, has been translated into various languages, and inserted in almost every newspaper and magazine in England and America. Then our hearts are warmed, our resolves strengthened, and our hopes encouraged to increase and magnify our own parts in the ever-acting drama. Biography may be said to be the key to history. It admits us into the privacies and behind the scenes, and makes us acquainted with the separate parts Of the great whole. In some respects the sight may be calculated to diminish our admiration; but this is only at a casual view, and to an inferior order of Observers. There will always be found great actors as the supporters of great events. Nothing, as Lear says. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from National Portrait Gallery, of Eminent Americans, Vol. 7: From Original Paintings Boston Gazette, which were reprinted in London by Thomas Hollis, who gave them the not very fortunate title, A Dissertation on the Canon and the Feudal Law, which has probably pre vented many persons looking at the tract, who would be interested by its review of the principles of the New England settlements, and its vigorous appeal to the people in the existing struggle. Notwithstanding he was looked to as a leader for the popular party, he had no sympathy with their acts of violence, and when the disturb ance occurred which resulted in the firing upon the people by the British troops, he independently and humanely, a thing which should always be re membered in his honor, gave his ser vices to Preston and the defence. This caused him some unpopularity, but did not hinder his election, immediately after, to the General Court, as the legis lative body was called in Massachu setts'. When the news of his election was brought to him, he made his first appearance at Faneuil Hall, and ao cepted the choice. It was the turning point of his career. On one side lay a profitable legal practice, in a routine dear to the legal mind on the other a troubled sea of opposition and revolt. A popular nominee has seldom accepted an election with less of satisfaction. I' considered the step, he said, devotion of my family to ruin and my self to death. Mrs. Adams burst into tears at the event, but approved the choice; the duty was clear, and the rest was piously left to Providence.
