The visualization of fluid flow has played a major role in the development of fluid dynamics and its applications, from the evolution of flight to tracking weather, and understanding the flow of blood. The Fluid Dynamics Division of the American Physical Society sponsors an annual competition for outstanding images of fluid flow. This volume includes a selection of winners from 1985 to the present. Each image is accompanied by some explanatory text, making the volume an important acquisition for anyone involved in fluid flow research.

Suitable for both a first or second course in fluid mechanics at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level, this book presents the study of how fluids behave and interact under various forces and in various applied situations - whether in the liquid or gaseous state or both.

This monograph explores the motion of incompressible fluids by presenting and incorporating various boundary conditions possible for real phenomena. The authors’ approach carefully walks readers through the development of fluid equations at the cutting edge of research, and the applications of a variety of boundary conditions to real-world problems. Special attention is paid to the equivalence between partial differential equations with a mixture of various boundary conditions and their corresponding variational problems, especially variational inequalities with one unknown. A self-contained approach is maintained throughout by first covering introductory topics, and then moving on to mixtures of boundary conditions, a thorough outline of the Navier-Stokes equations, an analysis of both the steady and non-steady Boussinesq system, and more. Equations of Motion for Incompressible Viscous Fluids is ideal for postgraduate students and researchers in the fields of fluid equations, numerical analysis, and mathematical modelling.

This book provides the first fully-fledged history of hydrodynamics, including lively accounts of the concrete problems of hydraulics, navigation, blood circulation, meteorology, and aeronautics that motivated the main conceptual innovations. Richly illustrated, technically competent, and philosophically sensitive, it should attract a broad audience and become a standard reference for any one interested in fluid mechanics.

"This book on an important area of applied mathematics is a compendium of the work of many pioneering authors and of research works from throughout the author's career ... It is intended to provide background for young scientists and graduate students as well as applied mathematicians and professional engineers. Some knowledge of vector calculus including the integral theorems such as Green's theorem, Stokes's theorem and divergence theorem is assumed on the part of the reader. Isotropic tensor calculus is used sparingly in some chapters. A famliarity with the Bessel functions, Legendre polynomials and hypergeometric functions is also expected" -- Back cover.

This textbook describes the fundamental OC physicalOCO aspects of fluid flows for beginners of fluid mechanics in physics, mathematics and engineering, from the point of view of modern physics. It also emphasizes the dynamical aspects of fluid motions rather than the static aspects, illustrating vortex motions, waves, geophysical flows, chaos and turbulence. Beginning with the fundamental concepts of the nature of flows and the properties of fluids, the book presents fundamental conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy, and the equations of motion for both inviscid and viscous fluids. In addition to the fundamentals, this book also covers water waves and sound waves, vortex motions, geophysical flows, nonlinear instability, chaos, and turbulence. Furthermore, it includes the chapters on superfluids and the gauge theory of fluid flows. The material in the book emerged from the lecture notes for an intensive course on Elementary Fluid Mechanics for both undergraduate and postgraduate students of theoretical physics given in 2003 and 2004 at the Nankai Institute of Mathematics (Tianjin) in China. Hence, each chapter may be presented separately as a single lecture."

This is an introduction to the dynamics of fluids at small scales, the physical and mathematical underpinnings of Brownian motion, and the application of these subjects to the dynamics and flow of complex fluids such as colloidal suspensions and polymer solutions. It brings together continuum mechanics, statistical mechanics, polymer and colloid science, and various branches of applied mathematics, in a self-contained and integrated treatment that provides a foundation for understanding complex fluids, with a strong emphasis on fluid dynamics. Students and researchers will find that this book is extensively cross-referenced to illustrate connections between different aspects of the field. Its focus on fundamental principles and theoretical approaches provides the necessary groundwork for research in the dynamics of flowing complex fluids.

To classify a book as 'experimental' rather than 'theoretical' or as 'pure' rather than 'applied' is liable to imply umeal distinctions. Nevertheless, some Classification is necessary to teIl the potential reader whether the book is for him. In this spirit, this book may be said to treat fluid dynamies as a branch of physics, rather than as a branch of applied mathematics or of engineering. I have often heard expressions of the need for such a book, and certainly I have feIt it in my own teaching. I have written it primariIy for students of physics and of physics-based applied science, aIthough I hope others may find it useful. The book differs from existing 'fundamental' books in placing much greater emphasis on what we know through laboratory experiments and their physical interpretation and less on the mathe matieal formalism. It differs from existing 'applied' books in that the choice of topics has been made for the insight they give into the behaviour of fluids in motion rather than for their practical importance. There are differences also from many existing books on fluid dynamics in the branches treated, reflecting to some extent shifts of interest in reeent years. In particular, geophysical and astrophysical applications have prompted important fundamental developments in topics such as conveetion, stratified flow, and the dynamics of rotating fluids. These developments have hitherto been reflected in the contents of textbooks only to a limited extent.
