"We have never seen so compendious a statement of the correspondence between Moses and Science, nor one which we would more gladly see in the hands of every intelligent Bible student. . . . We can honestly commend Dr. Townsend's luminous exposition of the general problem." —Christian Standard. "The argument perhaps offers as few difficulties as any theory that has been propounded. With its supplementary notes the book furnishes a concise study of one of the most interesting of all questions." —Morning Star. "He takes as a ' working hypothesis,' a theory ' that the evolution or creation of the physical universe, including our earth, has consumed periods so vast that the human mind cannot comprehend them;' and ' that apparently there are, in geology at least, six well-marked periods of activity, having immense durations, which may properly be termed cosmical or geologic days, and that these periods are prophetic or typical of six literal days, during which the Creator brought into being the vegetable and animal life now found upon the earth's surface.' The scheme is ingenious and well developed." —Central Christian Advocate.

Excerpt from The Mosaic Record and Modern Science Many Sabbath-school workers and Bible students have felt and expressed surprise that during the late discussions and explanations of the International Lesson Series, the Mosaic account of creation received such unsatisfactory defence. Though familiar with the current difficulties and objections, and in some instances unable to answer them, still the teacher and the student had not been alarmed; they presumed, that, when this subject should be critically examined and commented upon by the pulpit and the press, perfectly satisfactory explanations would be given. But as a matter of fact, we have to confess that a large number of even the more common objections either were not well met, or were passed in silence. Now, only a moments reflection is needed to show how unreasonable is the demand that all difficulties should be exhaustively examined and satisfactorily reviewed in the studies of a few weeks.
