Excerpt from The Miner's Magazine, 1913, Vol. 13 For such generosity manifested towards the poor the daily journals from the Atlantic to the Pacific teemed with editorials that showered praise upon the givers who made it possible for the impoverished to participate in the luxury of a' square meal. Salvation Armies, Volunteers of America, Sunshine Missions and charity organizations of every description, were appealing to the peo ple to open their purses, in order that the hungry might be fed on that anniversary, when pulpits proclaim: Peace on Earth Good Will to men. Excerpt from The Mining Magazine, Vol. 4: From January to June, 1911 T IS known that in the Pleistocene period much of the northern hemisphere was covered with ice, and that parts of Europe now mild and fertile were then frost-bound. In other words, the climate was much colder than at the present day. Why should there have been this interval of coldness and then an increase in mean temperature? Probably the principle of 'recalescence' has been al ready suggested, though we do not remember to have seen it so applied. At certain defined points the fall in the temperature of cooling bodies pauses and a slight rise ensues before the fall continues once more. Steel has three such points at 15000, and 1250f, re spectively, and the curve of cooling shows hollows followed by small crests. During the Ice Age the earth may have occupied-a hollow of this nature, and we may now be living in a period of recalescence. This theory is fur ther strengthened by the evidence which shows that the Ice Age more probably consisted of a series of cold periods instead of only one um interrupted era of geological time. We put this suggestion forward and hope that some of our geologist and physicist friends will discuss it. Excerpt from American Mining Congress Monthly Bulletin, Vol. 13: February, 1910 Fourth The practical solution of these questions requires the highest scientific and technical skill, and under present conditions can only be accomplished by large corporations for individual use, and when so solved give to the large concern an advantage over the smaller producer which makes his successful Operation im possible. Even the large companies solve these questions at the cost of immense duplication - a cost entirely beyond the reach of the smaller' operators, many of whom are the owners of potentially great mines, which would be worked if full information regarding methods was available. Investigation of mining methods, it is believed, would greatly improve mining conditions and bring about the adoption of many important economies. The publication of the results of inquiries of mining methods here and abroad, in order that the principles of each method and the conditions under which it could be applied could be determined, would undoubtedly be of vast benefit to the mining industry. Existing agencies are entirely inadequate for these investigations, which include prospecting, sinking, drifting, stoping, timbering, draining and hoisting, as well as the various methods of milling and smelting. The technical mining press has rendered great and important service in disseminating information, but is not prepared to finance Special investigations; even in pre s'enting results it labors under severe limitations of Space and cost. Excerpt from The Mining Magazine, Vol. 1: September, 1909 It has been said that Britons take their pleasures sadly it is more Obviously true that they take their holidays religiously. There fore, at this season the City lacks the presence Of the energetic spirits who are at the seaside or on the moors, renewing their youth in preparation for the Winter campaign. Thus there is a lull in the mining market, which, however, is in a decidedly healthy condition. In the early summer, as indicated by the calendar and not by the weather, there was sufficient Speculative activity to warrant talk Of a 'boom, ' especially in the Kaflir Circus, Where prices rose cheerfully, and in the American department, Where the quotations for half-a-dozen celebrated mines reflected a renewal Of interest on the part of the public. General financial and industrial conditions are healthy, so that a reasonable Optimism prevails. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Mining Magazine, Vol. 8: January to June, 1913 The Kyshtim continues to grow. From the latest figures it is apparent that the Ameri kansky orebody, east of the Karabash smelter, is an important asset. Seven boreholes have tested this orebody, so that Mr. R. Gilman Brown is able to estimate that tons of 314% copper ore have been proved. The total reserve in the four mines is now esti mated at tons, with more tons regarded as probable. For 1913 the out put is expected to be to tons of ore, yielding 7600 to 8000 tons of copper. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Mining Magazine, Vol. 6: From January to June, 1912 Rhodesia. The November statistics show a further decrease in gold production, being 1143 ounces less than October, and 2784 less than September. The November output was worth as against in August. The decrease is due to small changes at a number of mines and does not reflect any pronounced decline at any one property. Rhodesian dividends in 1911 amounted to as against in 1910. Among the contributors are the Wankie colliery and the Rhodesia chrome mine. The influence of public opinion is shown by the voluntary withdrawal, by the board of directors of the Amalgamated Properties of Rhodesia, of the provision conferring upon the directors the power to increase the capi tal of the company without the consent of the shareholders. A resolution to this effect is to be officially submitted at the general meeting on January 25. At that meeting Dr. Hans Sauer will make an explanation. It is ur gently required. Shamva shares have been weak owing to realizations on the part of well informed speculators. Even some good news concern ing the third adit did not raise the quotation. Irresponsible scribblers write concerning this deposit as if it were a lode likely to be persis tent to great depth it is an irregular deposit of interlacing quartz stringers in a shear-zone traversing a quartzitic sandstone. Such a for mation has larger dimensions laterally than vertically. The Shamva is a valuable mine, but, like others in Rhodesia, it has been the victim of robust optimism.
