Many threatened populations of plant species occupy a very small area, ranging from a few square metres to a few hectares. To protect them, some countries have established legal systems that permit them to create and manage small or very small reserves, called micro-reserves. This publication presents an analysis of micro-reserves for plant species, with special reference to those set up in the region of Valencia, Spain.

The effects of climate change on ecosystems are complex. The impact on the species and habitats protected by the Bern Convention may differ widely, depending on the species, their habitats and location. This publication includes seven expert reports presenting concrete measures for addressing the vulnerability of Europe's natural heritage in the face of climate change and its effects, and how this heritage must adapt in order to survive. With this publication, the Council of Europe aims to increase awareness about the links between biodiversity and climate, and emphasise the large potential for synergies when addressing biodiversity loss and climate change in an integrated manner.

"The effects of climate change on ecosystems are complex. The impact on the species and habitats protected by the Bern Convention may differ widely, depending on the species, their habitats and location. This publication includes six expert reports presenting concrete measures for addressing the vulnerability of Europe's natural heritage in the face of climate change and its effects, and how this heritage must adapt in order to survive. This publication reproduces the full text of Recommendation 135 (2008) on addressing the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, adopted by the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention in November 2008, which stresses the urgent need to tackle the impact of climate change on biological diversity and on its conservation. With this publication, the Council of Europe aims to increase awareness about the links between biodiversity and climate, and emphasise the large potential for synergies when addressing biodiversity loss and climate change in an integrated manner."--P.

This report discusses the problems involved in developing an environmental suitability model to manage three large carnivore populations in the Alpine region, for the bear, the lynx and the wolf. The aim is to identify sensitive areas, both in terms of areas particularly suitable for the survival of the species and those which represent broad unsuitable patches) and connecting corridors. It is based on the results obtained by the 'Large Carnivores Conservation Areas in Europe' (LCCA) project developed by the Istituto di Ecologia Applicata (IEA) of Rome.

Conservation in protected areas has focused on preserving biodiversity of ecosystems and species, whereas conserving the genetic diversity contained within species has historically often been ignored. However, maintaining genetic diversity is fundamental to food security and the provision of raw materials and it is best preserved within plants' natural habitats. This is particularly true for wild plants that are directly related to crop species and can play a key role in providing beneficial traits, such as pest or disease resistance and yield improvement. These wild relatives are presently threatened due to processes of habitat destruction and change and methodologies have been adapted to provide in-situ conservation through the establishment of genetic reserves within the existing network of protected areas.Providing a long-awaited synthesis of these new methodologies, this book presents a practical set of management guidelines that can be used for the conservation of plant genetic diversity of crop wild relatives in protected areas.

This book consists of several thematic groups, including botany, zoology and topics related to human health. In regards to botany, chapters discuss endemic plants of Bolivia, Mexico, Italy and the Caribbean. They show the diversity, distribution and conservation of many species. In regards to zoology, the book highlights endemic primates and reptiles. Additionally, the book presents other environmental issues relevant to conservation. This volume also presents topics related to health, some of which are relevant for their implications on health and the economy, is the case of the presence of toxins in the Pacific plankton. All chapters present relevant content for future research or because they are fundamental for territorial management.

This study has been prepared in the framework of the work programme of the Committee of Experts for the Pan-European Ecological Network. It gives an overview of national approaches to realise ecological corridors through land use planning and development policies of countries implementing the Pan-European Biological and Landscape Diversity Strategy.
