Excerpt from The Metropolitan Community Toward the close of the nineteenth century the city began to play a new réle in the evolution of settlement in the United States. With the rise of manufacturing, population and wealth became increasingly concentrated in the larger cities. The demand of the city for raw materials for its growing industries, and for specialized types of agricultural products for its increasing population, more and more determined the course of rural settle ment.' New frontiers continued to arise, but chiefly in areas from which products might be obtained to supply the domestic city market. On the other hand, many of the older areas of rural settlement began to recede in response to the economic forces originating in metropolitan centers. With the growth of population and wealth throughout the nation, the city acquired an increasing range of economic and social functions which it performed not only for its own inhabitants but for rural settle ments as well. Accordingly it increased in economic and cultural dominance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Metropolitan Magazine, Vol. 51: January to April, 1848 This knowledge of Chatterton' s character will enable us the better to judge. Of the degree of importance to be attached on statements. That he might imagine that the public would he more likely to take an interest in the poems of a monk of the fifteenth century, than 1n those of an unknown youth m a provina cial town, in the seventeenth, is very probable. Nor 1s it much to be wondered at, that he should all along continue to deny that the poems he had published were forgeries; Having once asserted their genuineness, he felt himself bound, by ever principle of honour, to maintain it. Chatterton' s notions of rig t and wrong, were neither rigid nor troublesome, and, to a person Of his habit of thinking, the doubtful fame resulting from a connexion with the ideal Bowley, might seem much preferable to that which the poems, divested of the charm of antiquity, might Obtain for At any rate, the forgery once committed, his (to use his own words) native unconquerable pride would never sufi'er him to own them to be simply the productions of his muse. Excerpt from The Structure of the Metropolitan Community: A Study of Dominance and Subdominance Since the hypothesis under study is a broad statement about the role of metropolitan centers in the organization Of an entire society, its validity cannot be tested on a small segment of land area or population. For this reason one entire nation, the United States, has been taken as an example of a technologically advanced society. It has been subjected to study by subdividing its entire area into metropolitan communities, and by abstracting patterns of population distribution from various groupings of these metropolitan communities and of their parts. Excerpt from The Metropolitan, Vol. 2: A Monthly Magazine, Devoted to Religion, Education, Literature, and General Information; February, 1854 January, 1855 To-day while at dinner, the cry reached our ears A steamer from the East! An eager throng abandons the table, and rushing above throws a searching look around the horizon. Far away in the mists, the dark, heavy hull is discerned like some huge monster issuing from the nether world. What speculations of the curious, touching her name, her character, her destination! The ag is run up to the mast-head; the guns are loaded for a salute; and the officers utter their com mands to subordinates in quick, abrupt tones. By degrees the outlines and pro portions of the stranger became distinct, and when the figure is perceptible by the practised eye of the captain, she is pronounced the arctic from Liverpool, bound for New York. At two miles distance we passed her, the only sign of life and companionship we had discovered since our departure: and though denied com munication, we rested content with the assurance that other hearts like our own, were beating in that ship, and that other voices would proclaim our safety to the dear friends in the solum natale, whither she was hastening. Excerpt from The Metropolitan, 1855, Vol. 3: A Monthly Magazine, Devoted to Religion, Education, Literature, and General Information For this success we are indebted less to our own efforts than to the generous exertions of the friends and patrons of the work, and to those who have so ably contributed to its pages. Among the latter we are proud to rank many of the ablest Catholic writers in the country; and others, who, though not within the pale of the Church, yet full of enlightened liberality, of expanded views, and of national principles, have at times lent us the aid of their gifted pens. To patrons, to contributors, and to the conductors of the press, we tender our grate ful acknowledgments, for the friendly aid and encouragement they have extended to the work. While we are grateful for the past, we are encouraged to look with hope to the future. The cause in which we are engaged is not our own: it is the common cause of Catholicity. The Church, year after year, is assuming a more promi nent position before the people of this country, and developing more widely her resources. With this development, her enemies become more active, and their hostility more determined. A work, therefore, designed to promote the interests of the one, and frustrate the machinations of the other, cannot be an object of indifference to the Catholic community. We can only assure our readers that the future of the Metropolitan, so far as our humble exertions extend, shall not disappoint their expectations; and as they have deemed the work heretofore worthy of their support, we shall use our best endeavors to render it more so. There is abundant Catholic talent in the country; we shall do our part to bring it into active exercise, - it is the duty of the reading Catholic community to acknowledge, to sustain, and encourage it. Let us then, respectively, do what devolves upon us, as publishers, editors, contributors, and public, and henceforth Catholic literature will be in the ascendant.
