Excerpt from The Messiah, Vol. 1 of 2: A Poem IN offering these volumes to the Public, it is deemed necessary to observe that while much attention has been given to render this version of the Messiah as close and faithful a transcript of the original as the spirit and idiom of two different languages will permit, and that care has been taken to abstain from encumbering the text with any additions, the Translator has not scru pled to make such abridgments as have appeared indispen sably requisite, in order to make a poem of' such length acceptable to the taste and habits of the English reader. Excerpt from The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah, Vol. 1 of 2 IN issuing a new edition of this book I wish, in the first place, again to record, as the expression of permanent convictions and feelings, some remarks with which I had prefaced the Second Edition, although happily they are not at present so urgently called for. With the feelings of sincere thankfulness for the kindness with which this book was received by all branches of the Church, only one element of pain mingled. Although I am well convinced that a careful or impartial reader could not arrive at any such conclu sion, yet it was suggested that a perverse ingenuity might abuse certain statements and quotations for what in modern parlance are termed 'anti-semitic purposes. That any such thoughts could possibly attach to a book concerning Him, Who was Himself a Jew Who in the love of His compassion wept tears of bitter anguish over the Jerusalem that was about to crucify Him, and Whose first utter ance and prayer when nailed to the Cross was: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do would seem terribly incongruous and painful. Nor can it surely be necessary to point out that the love of Christ, or the understanding of His Work and Mission, must call forth feelings far different from those to which reference has been made. To me, indeed, it is difficult to associate the so-called Anti Semitic movement with any but the lowest causes: envy, jealousy, and cupidity on the one hand or, on the other, ignorance, prejudice, bigotry, and hatred of race. But as these are times when it is meces sary to speak unmistakably, I avail myself of the present opportunity to point out the reasons Why any Talmudic quotations, even if fair, can have no application for anti-semitic purposes. Excerpt from Lectures on Theology, Vol. 2 of 2 Predictions of the Messiah prior to the Appearance of Christ - Their Import - Evidence that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah. Ive have seen that Jesus Christ is the Surety and Mediator of the New Covenant; and, in speaking of him in these characters, it was impossible to avoid references to the mysterious constitution of his person. This, however, is a subject so important, as to be entitled to distinct consideration, both be cause it is the foundation upon which the whole scheme of redemption de pends, and because some men of corrupt minds have, in all ages, and in various forms, exerted themselves to overthrow it. But, before we enter upon it, it will be proper to attend to the notices which were given of the Saviour to the church prior to his manifestation in the flesh, and then to show that Jesus of Nazareth is the promised Messiah.
